Responsibilities
- Responsible to keep assigned areas clean using provided machines and equipment. The custodian must be a qualified floor mechanic capable of performing all necessary cleaning work, including caring for any floor in the College. Participates in set‑ups as directed.
- Perform all necessary cleaning as observed or assigned on an as‑needed basis, including floors, walls, stairs, stairwells, ceilings, partitions, fixtures, and other surfaces.
- Review supplies available at the start of each shift to ensure sufficient quantities for all cleaning tasks, and arrange for pickup or delivery of items as needed.
- Plan and perform scheduled cleaning and intermittent daily cleaning of all restrooms within the assigned area, ensuring 100% coverage of soap, towels, disinfectants, and surfaces.
- Ensure that areas where food and beverages are served are kept clean; if problematic areas arise, consult with the Lead Custodian or Superintendent for assistance.
- Move furniture and equipment as directed and engage in major set‑ups/tear‑downs and furniture moves within the building.
- Make minor adjustments or repairs on certain equipment, keep machines clean or as directed by the supervisor, and notify the appropriate supervisor if irregularities are suspected.
- Lock and unlock doors and report any building security issues to Public Safety.
- Know written custodial procedures, including work orders, manuals, and other directions.
- Operate all equipment necessary for assigned tasks (floor machines, buffers, power vacuums, etc.).
- Pick up and remove paper garbage, refuse, and debris—including recycled materials—from common areas.
- Maintain activity within a 50‑foot radius outside all doors in the area of responsibility, such as sweeping litter, clearing grass or debris, spreading salt, and overseeing custodial, maintenance, and policing entrances/exits.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Six months of previous experience operating and maintaining machines inherent to the job (e.g., floor scrubber, buffer). This includes keeping the machines clean.
- Six months of previous experience in similar work assignments desired.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds required.
- Physically capable of completing major responsibilities listed above.
- Ability to read and write English.
- Must be dependable and punctual in reporting to and leaving work.
- Ability to make decisions and implement them after they are made, and fulfill requirements to complete assignments.
