General Information & Responsibilities

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists the Chief of Police in the administration of the Police Department; serves as an Officer of the Police Department; helps implement and direct departmental activities and supervises the Department in the absence of the Chief; and serves as a Peace Officer of and for the Black Hawk College District. In addition, the Sergeant shall be responsible for enforcing the law of the State of Illinois, the pertinent laws of the College district and/or the cities and counties where the college owns or controls property, and the ordinances and regulations of the college.

of Duties Description Of Essential Duties
  • Maintains public order on College property and/or at College functions.
  • Coordinates assignments on their shift and the supervision of College officers at College functions.
  • Conducts frequent but irregular patrols of the College to prevent and detect crimes and eliminate hazards, and identifies, investigates, and reports issues that impact the safety of the institution including those conditions and situations that impact the College’s risk management function.
  • Responsible for discretionary decisions involving matters pertaining to daily departmental operations as delineated in the department manual.
  • Responsible for the approval of reports submitted by officers into reports management system.
  • Patrols the College property and reports and handles incidents as required.
  • Takes proper actions with regard to violations of the law, safety hazards, and the protection of people and property.
  • Gives aid and assistance to members of the College community and other visitors.
  • Responsible for inspections to ensure compliance with State and local fire regulations, and functionality of the College’s fire detention and suppression systems.
  • Enforces traffic and parking regulations and laws, directs traffic, and investigates traffic accidents and other traffic services as needed.
  • Conducts investigations as required and as directed by the Chief.
  • Interviews and obtains statements from victims, witnesses, and suspects as required.
  • Reports to the Chief any event, situation, or condition warranting the Chief's attention.
  • Is responsible for all departmental equipment while on duty and for the proper care and maintenance of all issued equipment.
  • Adheres to all departmental policies, rules, and directives.
  • Coordinates and oversees department public safety technology systems, including RMS, body-worn camera, video surveillance, alarm, access control and fire safety systems, ensuring operational readiness, compliance, maintenance, and user support.
  • Maintains satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record.

  • Serves as a Campus Security Authority.
  • Assists in case preparation, prosecution, and courtroom testimony as required.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
  • High School Diploma or recognized equivalent required.
  • Minimum of three years consecutive experience as a certified law enforcement officer required.
  • Certification as a Peace Officer from the Illinois Police Training and Standards Board required.
  • Valid and current driver’s license required.
  • Working knowledge of the Campus Security Act.
  • Knowledge and skills in the use of police related equipment.
  • Must have no felony convictions.
