How You’ll Contribute

As a Traffic Operations Coordinator, you will support the safe and efficient movement of people throughout the City by installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing traffic control systems, street lighting, and related electrical equipment. You will apply your technical expertise to interpret plans and specifications, locate underground electrical facilities, and perform complex electrical work with a high degree of independence and accuracy.

Your role includes documenting maintenance activities, developing cost estimates, providing technical guidance on repairs and projects, and collaborating with contractors, vendors, and partner agencies to improve system performance and safety. Through this work, you will play a key role in maintaining reliable infrastructure that directly impacts public safety and daily travel for the community.

  • Install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair traffic control systems, street lighting, and related electrical equipment.
  • Perform journeyman-level electrical work using technical specifications, schematics, and construction drawings.
  • Locate and identify underground electrical facilities prior to excavation and construction activities.
  • Install and maintain transformers, relay boxes, control panels, solid-state controllers, and associated equipment.
  • Document all repairs, maintenance activities, and preventive maintenance in accordance with City procedures.
  • Provide technical direction and assistance on complex repair work, including support for investigations, depositions, and testimony when required.
  • Assist with the preparation of plans, specifications, and cost estimates for new construction, system modifications, safety improvements, and repairs.
  • Collaborate with representatives from the Illinois Department of Transportation, contractors, suppliers, and manufacturers to resolve technical issues and improve system efficiency.
  • Instruct, inspect, and assist outside contractors to ensure compliance with safety standards, specifications, and operational requirements.
  • Maintain tools, equipment, and inventory necessary to support electrical and traffic system operations.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Provide technical input and support during emergency response situations involving traffic signals or street lighting.
  • Participate in preventive maintenance programs to extend the life and reliability of traffic and electrical systems.
  • Assist with maintaining accurate parts inventories and supporting budget preparation for equipment and materials.
  • Support training and knowledge-sharing with coworkers on equipment, procedures, and safety practices.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable electrical codes, safety standards, and City policies.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, engineers, contractors, and the public regarding work activities and system impacts.
  • Participate in litigation support activities, including providing technical information and testimony when required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of traffic control systems, street lighting, electrical theory, solid-state controllers, and applicable operating policies and procedures.
  • Strong skill in performing journeyman-level electrical work using standard practices, tools, materials, and equipment in the electrical trade.
