How You’ll Contribute
As the Utilities Lift Station Technician, you’ll play a hands‑on role in maintaining both lift stations and the sewer collection systems to ensure reliable wastewater and stormwater operations. This position combines mechanical, electrical, and field maintenance responsibilities with system inspection and repair work.
You’ll perform work independently much of the time, using sound judgment to complete assignments, while operating under the direction of the Sewer Maintenance Manager. You may occasionally lead or assist field crews, and your work directly supports public health, environmental protection, and uninterrupted utility service to the community.
- Inspect, operate, maintain, and repair stormwater and sanitary sewer lift stations, including pumps, motors, valves, piping, rails, seals, and associated structures
- Perform routine, preventive, and predictive maintenance, including cleaning wet wells, screens, sensors, and removal of debris, grease, and sediment
- Remove, repair, rebuild, and replace pumps and related components, as well as maintain mechanical systems such as valves and piping assemblies
- Inspect, test, troubleshoot, and maintain electrical and control systems, including panels, starters, variable frequency drives (VFDs), wiring, alarms, and instrumentation
- Monitor pump performance, run times, flow levels, vibration, and system conditions to identify deficiencies or potential failures
- Operate and respond to SCADA and telemetry systems, including alarms and operational alerts
- Inspect facilities and infrastructure for structural integrity, blockages, storm damage, and safety hazards; prepare stations for severe weather events
- Assist with inspection, cleaning, and maintenance of sewer lines, manholes, and related infrastructure
- Operate sewer maintenance equipment and vehicles in support of system repairs and maintenance activities
- Read and interpret maps, GIS data, blueprints, and system diagrams
- Respond to emergency conditions including pump failures, sewer backups, overflows, power outages, and storm damage
- Establish and operate bypass pumping and take corrective action to restore system functionality
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, maintenance activities, repairs, and operational data using logs or computerized systems
- Report spills, overflows, and regulatory incidents in accordance with established procedures
- Comply with all federal, state, and local environmental, safety, and regulatory requirements
- Follow all safety procedures, including confined space entry, traffic control, lockout/tagout, and use of personal protective equipment
- Maintain tools, equipment, vehicles, and inventory in proper working condition
- Coordinate work with supervisors, operators, engineers, electricians, contractors, and other staff
- Assist with lift station upgrades, rehabilitation projects, and commissioning of new facilities
- Maintain lift station grounds, including mowing, weed control, and general site upkeep
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Principles and practices of stormwater and sanitary sewer lift station operations, including preventive and predictive maintenance
- Safe work practices, including confined space entry, lockout/tagout, OSHA standards, and working in high‑risk environments
- Environmental regulations related to sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs), spills, and stormwater compliance
- Emergency response procedures for pump failures, power outages, flooding, bypass pumping, and other system conditions
- Operation of tools, vehicles, hoists, lifting equipment, and specialized maintenance equipment
- Monitoring and responding to SCADA systems, alarms, and telemetry data
- Troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, and control system issues in field environments
- Accurate documentation, communication, coordination, and task prioritization in both routine and emergency situations
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Supplemented by technical courses in sanitary and stormwater sewer maintenance
