You'll play an important role in ensuring accurate water metering and exceptional customer service throughout the City. Whether you're installing and maintaining water meters, troubleshooting automated meter reading equipment, locating underground utilities, or assisting customers in the field, your work helps ensure reliable utility service and accurate billing for our community. Working independently under general supervision, you'll use technical skills, sound judgment, and excellent customer service to complete a variety of field service activities while maintaining accurate records and promoting safe work practices.

Essential

Duties
  • Install, maintain, test, troubleshoot, repair and/or replace water meters and components of computerized meter-reading system.
  • Perform field locates of underground water, sanitary/storm sewers and City-owned electric/traffic utilities using maps, plans, digital or hard copy records, GIS maps and specialized electronic detection equipment.
  • Collect water meter readings on an assigned route using computerized meter-reading system and ensure readings are accurately transmitted to billing personnel.
  • Perform various tasks to ensure the completeness and accuracy of meter readings. Investigate abnormal readings and circumstances.
  • Perform various field service tasks, including activities such as: turn on and turn off water; investigate customer complaints; collect water samples; collect initial and final meter readings; and deliver notices.
  • Maintain computerized records relating to metering, field service, and cross connection control activities.
  • Maintain inventory of metering system parts and supplies.
  • Troubleshoot and repair components of computerized meter reading system.
  • Conduct large meter tests.
  • Promote communication and information flow.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used to install, maintain, repair, and test water meters and automated meter reading systems. Specific knowledge of underground utilities locates and markings. Working knowledge of water utility operations, customer service practices, water metering, billing procedures, water sampling, and applicable regulations. Skill in operating hand and power tools used in water meter installation and repair.

Proficiency using Microsoft Office applications and specialized water meter reading software. Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, maps, GIS records, diagrams, and written instructions. Ability to identify problems, evaluate information, and determine appropriate corrective action. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with coworkers, contractors, and the public. Ability to respond courteously and effectively to customer inquiries and complaints. Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships while representing the City in the field.

Ability to multitask, prioritize work, and follow established policies, procedures, and safety regulations. Ability to work varied schedules and outdoor conditions as operational needs require

Qualifications

A combination of education and experience equivalent to the following:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in water meter reading, meter maintenance and repair, or utility locating.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of customer service experience.
  • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Valid driver's license
