Job DescriptionOverall Purpose
Works in a self‑contained classroom environment under the direction of the special education teacher. Students’ disabilities range from mild to severe. Implement programming designed by the teacher for children in activities that promote social, physical, adaptive, and intellectual growth. Attend to children’s basic needs by feeding, dressing, lifting, changing and toilet‑training them. Assist the special education teacher with enforcing the behavior rules and maintaining order.
EssentialFunctions
- Implements under the supervision of the assigned teacher, behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions for the purpose of presenting and/or reinforcing learning concepts.
- Assists students with physical disabilities according to their needs, including but not limited to transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, positioning, and personal care such as feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene.
- Assists with inventory, maintenance and care of equipment.
- Administers immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional (e.g., tube feeding, medication, etc.) to meet immediate health care needs.
- Assists with managing the behavior of students, including intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous students as needed.
- Recognizes differences in each student’s special medical, physical, communicative and emotional needs and adapts methods and interaction accordingly.
- Monitors individuals and/or groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g., classroom, playground, field trips, library, lunchroom, car and/or bus loading/unloading) and responds to emergency and non‑emergency situations to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
- Maintains confidentiality of students and other professional information.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
High School Diploma or GED Certificate required.
60 semester hours of college credit from an accredited educational institution or a passing score on the GACE Paraprofessional Assessment required.
Successful experience in a related job area preferred.
Physical RequirementsThe usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require significant lifting (up to 50 pounds), carrying, pushing and/or pulling, frequent stooping, kneeling and crouching.
Education/TrainingMaintains all licenses and certifications.
