Overview
This position is responsible for supervising inmates at the county jail. It includes processing and performing initial and periodic searches of inmates; searching housing areas, and ensuring the safety of the facility, inmates, staff, and visitors. It involves administering emergency basic first aid, taking rounds of the jail, monitoring inmate physical and mental condition, supervising inmate meal consumption and personal hygiene, and enforcing rules and regulations.
The role also involves supervising and controlling inmate behavior during day-to-day operations, restraining inmates as required, maintaining assigned weapon, equipment, and uniform, and taking charge of inmate personal property. Additional duties include transporting inmates to medical, court, and other appointments, supervising and directing the work of inmate workers, and utilizing the inmate classification system to separate inmates based on physical, mental, and behavioral histories.
The incumbent uses the records management system to enter and maintain records, visits, and shift logs; processes incoming and outgoing mail for contraband; maintains and updates GCIC records; investigates crimes and critical incidents; enacts emergency procedures in the event of riot, escape, or other critical incidents, and serves as a member of the Emergency Response Team. Performs related duties.
• Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
• Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Peace Officer Standards and Training Council for the State of Georgia.
