Position: Groundman - Overhead (Walton EMC)

Job Description

The Groundman position is your first step to a rewarding career in the construction and maintenance of our nation’s Power Grid. You will assist your team in building, repairing, and maintaining overhead electrical distribution systems.

Physical Aspects

The typical physical demands are: frequent standing, walking, reaching with hands and arms, rigorous physical labor, climbing various structures, and lifting or moving up to or in excess of 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, color, peripheral, and depth perception as well as the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

Team‑members may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, vibration, and extreme weather conditions while working outdoors. Noise levels can be loud.

General Expectations
  • Obtain a Commercial Driver’s License permit within 60 days of employment.
  • Read, write, and communicate effectively.
  • Travel long distances on short notice when required.
  • Work extended periods in various locations when required.
  • Lift more than 50 lbs.
  • Work overtime when requested.
  • Work outside normal hours, including weekends, holidays, and overtime if required.
Functions in Overhead Powerline Construction
  • Work safely during new construction, maintenance, or repair of energized and de‑energized overhead work.
  • Inspect rubber goods and personal protective equipment.
  • Understand when to wear personal protective equipment.
  • String overhead wire.
  • Set poles and anchors.
  • Assist with installing transformers, lightning arrestors, cut‑outs, cross‑arms, insulators, switches, and switch gear.
  • Assist in replacing fuses in transformers and clearing faulted circuits and systems.
  • Work with energized high‑voltage systems requiring skill and care.
  • Maintain company vehicles, equipment, and tools in good working order.
  • Apply basic rigging, hand lines, and lineman knot tying skills.
  • Use hand tools properly.
  • Follow directions and instructions.
  • Have basic knowledge of materials used in line work.
  • Identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit.
  • Familiarize with induced voltage.
  • Assist with installation and hookup of a single‑phase transformer.
  • Perform basic bucket rescue/escape.
  • Understand equipment set‑up and grounding concepts.
  • Work at heights and/or in confined spaces.
  • Understand minimum approach distances.
  • Understand excavation and shoring requirements.
  • Check voltage on transformers.
  • Install and remove a service.
  • Climb different types of structures (wood, steel, etc.) and use appropriate tools.
  • Use Kellum grips when necessary.
  • Identify various line‑work materials.
  • Work outdoors even in inclement weather.
  • Perform all other related work as required to complete the job.
