The Office of Juvenile Justice is seeking a confident, detail-driven Juvenile Justice Specialist 5 – Safety Officer to support safety operations within a secure-care environment. This leadership role is ideal for someone who excels in structure, communication, and maintaining safe conditions for youth and staff.

As a Safety Officer, you’ll help reinforce safety standards, support emergency readiness, and contribute to consistent operational practices across the facility. You’ll work closely with supervisory staff, assist with inspections and compliance efforts, and help ensure that daily operations align with OJJ’s mission and safety expectations.

Qualifications and Experience

Possession of a high school diploma or GED or one year of experience in any field plus:

  • Three years of experience in a residential, correctional, behavioral health, or group home setting with responsibility for one or more of the following: rehabilitation of delinquent youth, clinical care, custody, or security; OR
  • Three years of experience in Probation and Parole.

Special Requirements
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.
  • In accordance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) (Part 115:17) of Title 28 of the Code of Federal Regulations an applicant who has been found to have engaged in any form of sexual abuse; engaged in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable or refused will be disqualified.

The incumbent of this position must not have been convicted or pled nolo contendere to a crime listed in R.S. 15:587.1 (c).

NOTE:

Prior to an appointment, the selected applicant must take and pass a drug screening test, possess a valid Louisiana Driver's License, and clear a background check.

Job Duties
  • Leads daily safety operations — oversees safety practices, conducts rounds, and ensures staff and youth follow established safety protocols.
  • Conducts inspections and compliance checks — performs routine and unannounced inspections of units, equipment, and physical areas to ensure adherence to agency standards.
  • Supports emergency readiness — assists with emergency response coordination, reviews incident documentation, and reinforces preparedness procedures.
  • Monitors youth and staff movement — ensures safe transitions during daily activities, verifies counts, and supports structured movement throughout the facility.
  • Provides safety training and guidance — helps reinforce safety expectations, supports staff development, and communicates updates to policies and procedures.
  • Maintains documentation and reporting — completes safety-related reports, tracks compliance issues, and ensures accurate recordkeeping.
  • Supports leadership coverage — assists supervisory staff, provides guidance to team members, and performs additional duties as assigned.
