Juvenile Justice Specialist 6

The Office of Juvenile Justice is seeking a strong, mission-driven Juvenile Justice Specialist 6 to support security operations, staff leadership, and youth-focused programming at Swanson Center for Youth. This role serves as the principal assistant to the Corrections Lieutenant Colonel and plays a key part in maintaining safety, structure, and therapeutic consistency within a secure-care environment.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a high school diploma or GED or one year of experience in any field plus:
Three years of experience in a residential, correctional, behavioral health, or group home setting with responsibility for one or more of the following: rehabilitation of delinquent youth, clinical care, custody, or security; OR Three years of experience in Probation and Parole. Necessary special requirements:
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted. In accordance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) an applicant who has been found to have engaged in any form of sexual abuse;

engaged in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable or refused will be disqualified.

Job Duties and Other Information

As a JJS-6, you'll provide steady leadership, help guide staff performance, support quality assurance efforts, and ensure daily operations align with OJJ standards and youth-development goals. You'll contribute to a positive, accountable culture by modeling professionalism, reinforcing safety expectations, and supporting the facility's therapeutic reform initiatives.

  • Leads security and operations — supervises staff, ensures a secure therapeutic environment, conducts unannounced inspections, and reports routine and unusual matters to leadership.

  • Oversees program administration — participates in quality assurance audits, assists with policy development, manages unit schedules and activities, and supports LaMOD therapeutic reform requirements.

  • Manages training and safety — serves as training and safety officer, develops safety policies, analyzes accident and hazard data, reviews reports, and conducts Code of Conduct hearings.

  • Ensures security compliance — responds to emergencies, oversees searches, enforces contraband-control policies, conducts perimeter checks, and ensures accurate record storage and retention.

  • Provides personnel leadership — completes performance evaluations, identifies training needs, counsels staff, reviews disciplinary actions, and ensures timely submission of time and attendance records.

  • Supports cross-disciplinary coordination — consults with supervisors, the Lieutenant Colonel, and other disciplines regarding staff actions and operational decisions.

  • Maintains 24-hour readiness — subject to around-the-clock call-outs and performs additional duties as assigned.
