Position: JUVENILE JUSTICE SPECIALIST 6-TACTICAL OPERATIONS MAJOR

About This Job

Office of Juvenile Justice Swanson Center for Youth-Monroe 4701 S Grand St., Monroe, LA 71202 The Office of Juvenile Justice is seeking a decisive, highly skilled Juvenile Justice Specialist 6 – Tactical Operations Major to lead tactical operations at one of Louisiana's secure-care facilities for adjudicated youth. This role is ideal for a confident leader who thrives in fast-moving environments, responds calmly under pressure, and is committed to maintaining safety, order, and operational excellence.

As the Tactical Operations Major, you'll supervise tactical officers, respond to alarms and incidents, coordinate tactical missions, and ensure that all actions align with agency policies and strategic directives. You'll work closely with facility leadership to support youth movement, conduct searches, enforce contraband-control procedures, and maintain documentation. You'll also oversee staff performance, training, and equipment readiness while ensuring the tactical unit remains fully prepared for emergencies and major incidents.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a high school diploma or GED or one year of experience in any field plus:
Three years of experience in a residential, correctional, behavioral health, or group home setting with responsibility for one or more of the following: rehabilitation of delinquent youth, clinical care, custody, or security; OR Three years of experience in Probation and Parole. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted. In accordance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) (Part 115:17) of Title 28 of the Code of Federal Regulations an applicant who has been found to have engaged in any form of sexual abuse;

engaged in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force, or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable or refused will be disqualified.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Leads tactical response operations — responds to beeper alarms, supervises officers during disturbances, and coordinates statewide, regional, and local tactical missions and shakedowns.

  • Implements strategic and emergency plans — interprets strategic directives, establishes shared situational awareness, documents tactical decisions, and ensures rapid, effective actions to protect life and property.

  • Maintains facility safety & youth movement — works with facility leadership to ensure safe youth movement, conducts searches, enforces contraband-control policies, and completes required documentation.

  • Supervises and develops staff — manages subordinate staff, approves leave, conducts CPM planning and evaluations, identifies training needs, and ensures equipment and certifications remain current.

  • Ensures operational readiness — monitors facility structure and functional roles, stays current on major-incident policies, and ensures tactical preparedness across the unit.

  • Serves as shift supervisor — oversees tactical response operations during assigned shifts and performs duties of the Tactical Response Lieutenant Colonel in their absence.

  • Maintains 24-hour availability — subject to around-the-clock call-outs and able to perform any related duties as assigned.
