Job Description

Provide support to the teacher in the instruction of students with exceptional needs. This position is responsible to the classroom teacher and/or school administrators and will carry out duties such as teaching, classroom management, and administrative support.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Give group instruction and provide individualized instruction as prescribed by the teacher.
  • Praise and reinforce achievement of students.
  • Report student progress to the teacher.
  • Serve as substitute teacher.
  • Arrange classroom furnishings and equipment.
  • Prepare visual aids and duplicate materials.
  • Reorganize materials at the end of the day.
  • Serve as proctor during testing.
  • Perform morning and afternoon carpool duties.
  • Monitor lunch and recess.
  • Monitor classroom and manage behavior.
  • Check and correct students' work while in progress and keep students on task.
  • Assist in instructional preparation/support.
  • Distribute and collect instructional materials.
  • Complete and organize paperwork and other support documents.
  • Plan and prepare for instructional activities with the classroom teacher.
  • Assist in escorting and supervising students to other locations.
  • Assist teachers with non-instructional classroom duties, such as snack, lunch, bulletin boards, and other daily routines.
  • Secure and organize classroom supplies.
  • Assist in reading, storytelling, calendar, and other appropriate activities.
  • Assist small groups in the library, art class, computer lab, etc.
  • Participate in appropriate in-service activities.
  • Assist with classroom discipline.
  • Attend meetings of the school as directed.
  • Observe student performance and assist students in correcting seat work.
  • Maintain the classroom in a clean, orderly, and functional condition.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with others.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the classroom teacher or school administrator.
  • Strive to be a desirable example for students in attitude, actions, speech, and dress.
  • Any other assigned duties.

  • Keyboarding skills with accuracy at the required speed.

  • Ability to compile and summarize information.
  • Problem-solving ability with sound judgment.
  • Telephone etiquette.
  • Maintain confidentiality in matters relating to the school system.
  • Exercise independent judgment and initiative in completing work assignments.
  • Business letter writing and memo skills.
  • Compose correspondence independently.
  • Work in the absence of supervision.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Desired Training and Hands-On Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent degree.
  • Board may accept alternative qualifications as appropriate and acceptable.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Physical ability to lift up to 10 pounds occasionally and up to 20 pounds as needed.
  • Interpersonal communication to convey information to parents, students, and staff.
  • Application of common sense to carry out written, oral, or diagrammatic instructions.
  • Effective written and verbal communication in Standard English.
  • Basic numerical aptitude: adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing.
  • Coordinate eye and hand use of a keyboard.
  • Adaptability to performing under minimal to moderate stress.
  • Ability to talk, write, and hear.
  • Annual performance assessment per Board policy.
  • Salary and work year as established by the Board.
