Position: Engineer II, Technology (Process Engineer)

ATI is seeking a technically driven and detail-oriented engineer to support and optimize our melting and remelting operations for high-performance alloys, including nickel, cobalt, and specialty steels. This role serves as a key technical contact for both internal teams and customers, driving process excellence across VIM, ESR, and VAR operations.

The ideal candidate will lead continuous improvement initiatives, maintain process controls, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to enhance safety, quality, and efficiency. From troubleshooting non-conformances to advancing process capabilities through data analysis and trials, this position plays a critical role in ensuring ATI's materials meet the demanding standards of our global customers. Multiple skill levels will be hired, and relocation will be provided.

Essential

Functions (other duties may be assigned)
  • Internal/external technical contact for complete melting and remelting process for nickel base, cobalt base, and specialty steel alloys, including VIM, ESR, and VAR.
  • Provide support for formulation, conditioning, and preparatory operations.
  • Maintenance and standardization of operating instructions, mill instructions, and related equipment recipes.
  • Establish, monitor, and maintain SPC limits for key products and processes within the melt and remelt departments.
  • Provide technical support in resolving process-related non-conformances and customer complaints.
  • Lead or participate in customer audits of ATI manufacturing facilities and supplier facilities.
  • Develop understanding of equipment capabilities and evaluate impact of melt parameter changes/process improvements.
  • Develop understanding of various alloys and their specific melt-related characteristics and behaviors.
  • Collaborate with Operations and Maintenance personnel to develop improvements to manufacturing processes and standards that enhance safety, equipment performance, and product quality.
  • Plan, execute and manage continuous improvement programs using P–D–C–A approach, statistical data analysis, process modeling, and trials.
  • Lead or participate in team-based continuous improvement activities including risk assessments, problem solving reports, process audits, and standard work.
  • Communicate results to management, operations, colleagues, and customers via written reports and oral presentations.
  • Support internal/external customers by analyzing process data, chemistry data, and non-destructive testing data.
Basic Qualifications
  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, or related field.
  • Internships and/or co‑op work experience in a metals-related industry.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Process or product engineering experience or higher education related to Ni/Co‑base superalloys and/or specialty steels.
  • Working knowledge of cast‑wrought processing (conventional primary melting, secondary remelting, press forging, radial forging, hot rolling, conditioning, heat treatment, etc.).
  • Statistical data analysis experience using JMP, Minitab, or related software.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
Skills
  • Strong technical background with focus on metals, processing, and structure/property relationships.
  • Technical writing and oral presentation skills.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills at all levels.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts and requirements to non‑technical personnel clearly and concisely.
  • Self‑starter and ability to work independently as well as on a team.
  • Uses scientifically rigorous, data‑driven approach to problem solving.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks under pressure while maintaining composure and meeting deadlines.
