General Description
Under direction, the Firefighter/EMT/Paramedic controls and extinguishes fires, responds to emergency situations where life, property, or the environment is at risk; performs fire prevention, public education, emergency medical service, hazardous material response, search and rescue, and disaster assistance.
Responsibilities- Performs fire prevention, suppression, and rescue activities; responds to fire alarms; makes openings in burning buildings for ventilation and entry; lays and connects hose lines; operates nozzles directing water streams; operates portable chemical fire extinguisher, axes, claw tools, and other equipment; performs salvage operations at fire scenes; drives and operates all vehicles; raises and climbs ladders; prevents the spread of fire and protects property from water damage;
tests fire hydrants; assumes command of fire or emergency scene in the absence of an officer; administers pre‑fire planning program; communicates with dispatcher and safety personnel via two‑way radio. - Performs emergency medical care functions; operates ambulance and provides emergency medical treatment to injured and ill persons (bandaging, administers oxygen, CPR); immobilizes fractures; administers other first‑aid procedures; removes persons from emergency situations; administers IVs; performs surgical airway management, assists in childbirth; utilizes blood pressure cuff, stethoscope, IV kit, backboards; monitors and interprets EKGs; defibrillates cardiac patients; inserts EOA and ET tubes;
administers medication; monitors cardiac telemetry; maintains radio communication with hospital. - Ensures equipment is fully prepared and functional at all times; performs general maintenance and upkeep of apparatus, equipment and fire station; performs and documents required equipment inspections; participates in preventative maintenance on fire apparatus and station; assists in maintenance and testing of fire hydrants; maintains records and prepares reports regarding alarms, daily activities, supplies, and other matters relating to the department.
- Functions as incident commander in absence of an officer; performs inspection of buildings and properties for fire prevention ordinances; attends meetings, seminars, workshops; complies with OSHA safety standards; demonstrates punctual attendance and ability to work with others.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Insurable under the City’s vehicle insurance policy.
- Ohio State Career Firefighter II Certification.
- Ohio certificate to practice as an EMT‑Basic, EMT‑Advanced, or EMT‑Paramedic.
Completion of secondary education or equivalent (high school diploma or GED); successful completion of the State Firefighter II Certification Program and EMT Certificate; must meet physical and psychological requirements for firefighter, EMT and/or Paramedic; any equivalent combination of education, experience and training; ability to pass a comprehensive background check.
Equipment OperatedFire suppression, rescue, and other emergency services tools and equipment such as fire engines, four‑wheel drive patrols, fire trucks, aerial ladder trucks, utility vehicles, boats, hoses, nozzles, ladders, pick‑axes, chainsaws, crowbars, hydraulic rescue tools, sledgehammers; EMT equipment; communication devices; standard office equipment.
Inherently Hazardous or Physically Demanding Working ConditionsEmployee ascends and/or descends ladders, stairs, or scaffolds; exposure to chemical compounds, hazardous gases, flammables, electrical shock, radiation, explosions, extreme temperatures, noise above 85 dB; exposure to high temperatures, winds, shock, blood, bodily fluids; uses protective equipment; requires lifting 50 to 100 pounds occasionally, 25 to 50 pounds frequently, 10 to 20 pounds constantly; considered heavy work per U.S. Department of Labor.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Knowledge of city policies, emergency medical care procedures, first aid, CPR, medical technology, terminology, fire suppression and prevention techniques, fire rescue techniques, fire investigation, arson detection, fire prevention laws, codes, regulations, tools, radio operations, geographic layout, safety practices, English grammar.
- Skill in use of modern office equipment, computer programs (Microsoft Office), motor vehicle operation, standard firefighting equipment operation.
- Ability to interpret instructions, solve problems, exercise independent judgment, demonstrate physical endurance and agility, perform heavy manual labor, maintain fitness standards, develop relationships.
