Job Info:

  • This is a non-continuing/temporary position for secondary summer school.
  • Start date is June 15, 2026, 3 hours per week through June 29, 2026.
  • From June 30 to August 6, schedule will be 8:45am-12:45pm Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Prep time is one additional hour per week during this time.
  • Summer School wrap up is August 10-12, Monday to Wednesday, 9:00am-1:00pm.
  • Employee per diem rate paid by timesheet.
  • One position available.

TITLE: Summer School Counselor

REPORTS TO: Summer School Admin

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Building Principal, provide for student success by supporting students in maximizing their potential, by providing behavioral, educational, and vocational counseling to individuals and small groups of students; assist students in understanding and seeking solutions to social, emotional, or academic issues; serve as a resource for staff and families pertaining to success; be a liaison to community resources.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree with ESA endorsement in school counseling.
  • Minimum of two years of successful teaching at the same level as a counseling position.
  • Bilingual skills (Spanish) (optional but preferred).
  • Maturity, good judgment, and organizational/time management skills.
  • Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint clearance.
  • I-9 employment eligibility in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act.
  • HIV/HBV training obtained within 60 days of hire date (District provided).
  • Human Resources new hire training obtained within 60 days of hire date (District provided).
  • Current valid CPR and First Aid may be required for the specific assignment.
  • Knowledge of best practices in counseling, educational, vocational, social, and emotional counseling; understanding of ELL services, etc.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct small group counseling activities related to career, personal, academic, social, and emotional issues.
  • Serve as the building’s coordinator to collect, organize, and analyze student information through educational historical data and standardized testing.
  • Appraise student interests, aptitudes, and attitudes using assessment strategies and instruments.
  • Meet, confer, and counsel with parents, staff, and youth-serving agencies to develop alternative solutions to student educational, social, and emotional concerns and follow up on referrals as needed.
  • Assist in planning, development, and monitoring of individual education and 504 plans for students with exceptional needs and participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings.
  • Assist in planning, development, and implementation of the master schedule and programs that enhance student educational opportunities.
  • Oversee maintenance of comprehensive student files and records and safeguard confidentiality.
  • Assist in dealing with student behavior management problems and resolving attendance concerns and personal issues.
  • Provide classroom guidance.
  • Consult with parents to meet individual student needs.
  • Arrange classroom presentations on specific topics as requested by teachers and directed by building administration.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities as directed by building administration.
  • Counsel individual students as time permits.
  • Develop and implement programs to encourage academic success and retention.
  • Interpret school objectives to students, parents, and community.
  • Maintain and update a directory of referral services for crisis situations.
  • Provide short-term student crisis intervention and follow-up consultation with parents.
  • Serve as building contact for home-hospital programs.
  • Organize transition activities as students move to new buildings.
  • Assist in orientation, registration, and scheduling of new students.
