Description

Edmonds College (EC) is accepting applications to fulfill the role of English Language Acquisition Associate Faculty for the Correction Education program located at the Twin Rivers Unit at the Monroe Correctional Complex in Monroe, Washington.

The position will be responsible for preparing adult English language learners for academic classes and careers and have curriculum outcomes in writing, reading, speaking and listening, and grammar. This pilot program will serve a range of levels with classroom assistant support. ELA follows College and Career Readiness Standards adopted by the Office of Basic Education. After completing ELA, our students go either to Academic English, Professional and Technical programs, or directly into college English.

Most quarters are 11 weeks long; each week consists of approximately six to eight hours of class time. Both daytime and evening class times are possible. Training for teaching online or using Canvas (the college's learning management system) is available for all employees.

Minimum Qualifications
  • BA or higher in TESL, or BA or higher in a related field and applicable academic experience or certificate in teaching English as a Second Language or a Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language conferred prior to the start of employment. Equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Teaching, Classroom, or Tutoring experience with adult English language learners
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students from varied backgrounds and life experiences in oral and written English.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with advisers, faculty, and staff in an academic environment
  • Experience in designing and delivering culturally, linguistically, and socially responsive curriculum and assessments.
  • Must pass Dept. of Corrections criminal background check and comply with DOC required training and safety protocols.
Compensation

The work schedule is based on an eleven-week quarterly schedule and could vary each quarter. Salary is dependent upon contract load and mode of instruction. A standard five-credit "lecture mode" class would be approximately $6,387.94 at Step

A. Special assignments are paid at $45 per hour, and meeting stipends are compensated per the CBA rate, starting at $55 for meetings lasting from 30 minutes up to 2 hours.

Physical Work Environment

Work is typically performed in a classroom and office and can require standing or sitting for extended periods. Faculty members are required to use computers and other technologies in the work environment. This is an in-person teaching position inside the Monroe Correctional Complex.

Conditions of Employment
  • You must document your citizenship or employment authorization within three days of hire.
  • Criminal background check. Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal history will be conducted. Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant’s suitability and competence to perform in the position.
  • All new positions are contingent upon funding.
