Title: Emergency Substitute Teacher

Reports To: Building Principal

Position Summary:

School districts that have exhausted or reasonably anticipate exhausting their list of qualified substitutes may request the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction to issue an emergency substitute certificate to individuals who are not fully qualified as teachers. The emergency substitute certificate is restricted for use in the requesting school district once its list of otherwise qualified substitutes has been exhausted.

Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s Degree or higher from an accredited university and have experience working with children. An Emergency Substitute Certificate enables qualified candidates to serve as a substitute teacher.

In the absence of the regular classroom teacher, the substitute implements the daily instructional plans and provides meaningful instruction, maintaining a favorable learning environment, establishing rapport with students, managing classroom, and working with the building administrator and other teachers to minimize transition problems.

Required

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • Prior successful experience working with children or youth
Certificates, Licenses, Registration
  • Valid Emergency Substitute Teaching Certificate or must have the ability to obtain one
  • Valid Washington State driver's license or evidence of mobility
Special Requirements
  • Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint clearance
  • I-9 employment eligibility in compliance with the Immigrations Reform and Control Act
  • HIV/HBV training (obtain within 60 days of hire date – District provided)
  • Human Resources new hire training (obtain within 60 days of hire date – District provided)

  • Adhere to federal, state laws and district regulations, policies, procedures and practices
  • Mandatory reporter for incidents of child abuse, harassment, intimidation, bullying, fights, substance abuse, etc.
  • Abides by employment provisions provided for in the collective bargaining agreement
  • Observe strict confidentiality regarding student information
  • Maintain regular punctual attendance
Position Responsibilities
  • Reports to school office at beginning of school day to pick up required materials/schedule of classes and at the end of the school day to return materials; follows sign‑out procedures as prescribed by the district.
  • Carries out a program of study prescribed in the lesson plans left by the classroom teacher.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students, ensuring fairness and respect.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and objectives as indicated in the lesson plans for the lessons, units, or projects assigned.
  • Employs instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting lesson objectives.
  • Uses positive verbal and nonverbal skills that enhance learning.
  • Maintains a neat and orderly classroom.
  • Takes attendance in accordance with district procedures.
  • Indicates to students at the beginning of class the basic expectations for behavior in the class in accordance with school and Monroe Public Schools policies.
