Job DescriptionTITLE Para educator – Specialized Instructional - 1:1 Student Support
REPORTS TO Building Principal
LOCATION Monroe High School, Monroe, Washington
POSITION SUMMARY Under supervision, perform a variety of instructional activities; assist in promoting student learning; perform routine and supportive tasks for instructional personnel; and complete other related work as required within a collaborative team.
Qualifications- Be at least eighteen years of age and hold a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Hold an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university
** or**- have earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at the 100‑level or higher at an accredited college or university
** or** - completed an apprenticeship as a para educator in a program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council
** or** - received a passing score on one of the PESB approved assessments (see Monroe SD employment information page for more information).
- have earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at the 100‑level or higher at an accredited college or university
- First Aid, CPR, and AED certification.
- CPI‑certification for specific positions such as Positive Behavior Support (PBS) or Structured Learning Center (SLC) and some 1:1 student support positions.
- Completion of all state required para educator certifications.
- Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint clearance.
- I‑9 employment eligibility in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act.
- HIV/HBV training (to be obtained within 60 days of hire – district provided).
- Human Resources new‑hire training (to be obtained within 60 days of hire – district provided).
- Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position, including lifting, carrying, and supporting students up to 150 pounds and responding to eloping students.
Education and Experience
- One year of paid or volunteer experience working with multi‑age groups of children.
- Equivalent completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by training or coursework in child growth and development, instructional technology, or a closely related field.
- Assist instructional personnel with the presentation of learning materials and delivery of instructional programs.
- Work with students with a wide range of physical, mental, social, and behavioral disabilities, from mild academic difficulties to severe intellectual impairments.
- Tutor individual students and small groups to reinforce and follow up learning activities.
- Monitor and assist students in drill, practice, and study activities per the instructional program and individual student learning plan.
- Direct students into safe learning activities, assist in shaping appropriate social behaviors, and monitor for safety during recess and transitions.
- Assist in the management of student behavior through positive strategies and techniques, collaborating on behavior plans with fidelity.
- Prepare a variety of instructional materials and learning aids as directed by the supervising teacher.
- Provide support for students requiring catheterization, and attend to basic care of students including toileting, diapering, dressing, and feeding.
- Perform routine first aid, including assistance for seizures or respiratory distress.
- Maintain records and files, including confidential student records.
- Operate and assist students with instructional media, equipment, and technology.
- Administer and score a variety of criterion‑referenced and general aptitude tests, recording results.
- Assist with transitions on and off the school bus and help students organize materials.
- De‑escalate students per district protocol and to uphold safety.
- Adhere to federal and state laws, district regulations, policies, procedures, and practices, including mandatory reporting for incidents of abuse, harassment, intimidation, bullying, substance abuse, and related issues.
- Maintain confidentiality of student and staff information.
- Observe punctual attendance and abide by collective bargaining agreement provisions.
