Job Summary of ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Adheres to Hospital Policies and Procedures and Philosophy of Care. Consistently exhibits professional conduct that is a behavior-based expression of the hospital’s Standards of Excellence. Assesses plans, organizes, implements, and evaluates individualized, professional patient care to adult patients within the Progressive Care Unit and Medical Surgical Telemetry Unit. Provides nursing care as directed by medical staff and in accordance with the objectives, and the state Nurse Practice Act.

Participates in patient teaching and discharge planning. Demonstrates knowledge, skills, and critical thinking ability required to function on the unit and to respond to rapidly changing patient needs. Uses an understanding of the principles of growth and development to assess each patient's age specific needs and provide age specific appropriate treatment and care. Participates in unit and hospital Performance Improvement activities.

Assumes Charge Nurse Role as assigned.

Required Education, Training and Experience

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, and current Washington State Registered Nurse (RN) license. Requires current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, must obtain Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification within 30 days of hire date. Must obtain NIHSS Stroke Certification within 90 days of hire date. Previous progressive care and/or medsurg acute care nursing experience preferred.

Essential Functions/Technical Primary Duties
  • Provides direct patient care and functions as a patient advocate.
  • Assesses the comprehensive nursing needs of an assigned group of patients.
  • Coordinates the patient and family/significant other education process.
  • Continuously plans, implements, and evaluates patient care, incorporating patient and family/significant other into the process.
  • Participates with physician partners and other interdisciplinary team members to develop and implement patient and family/significant other plan of care.
  • Communicates effectively all relevant information (e.g., patient information, safety issues, problems with equipment, quality issues, etc.) to immediate supervisor, in timely way.
  • Communicates and documents changes in patient condition, on a timely basis, to charge nurse/supervisor and physician.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, comprehending and speaking English as required for business necessity.
  • Accountability for HIPAA privacy and security standards within the department or assigned nursing unit.
  • Must possess basic skills to use Microsoft Office, specialized software and electronic office equipment.
  • Provides patient care, based on physical, psychosocial, educational, safety and related criteria, specific to the age of the patient population served in the department or assigned nursing unit.
  • Adheres to organizational patient safety standards relevant to the department or assigned nursing unit.
  • Delivers nursing care within established standards of care, hospital and unit guidelines, policies and procedures.
  • Delegates routine tasks and the collection of patient information to others within their scope of practice and requests feedback regarding all delegated activities.
  • Provides and documents ongoing patient and family/significant other education.
  • Assists other staff in completion of their duties, when time permits.
  • Recognizes need for change in policy and procedure and participates in review and revision.
  • Recognizes situations when appropriate assistance is needed to effectively execute the nursing process.
