TITLE: Athletic Coach – Assistant Level
REPORTS TO: Head Coach of the Assigned Sport
POSITION SUMMARY
To provide assistance to the head coach. To plan, organize and implement the teaching of fundamentals, strategies, rules and proper condition in the assigned sport, designed to meet the needs and interest of student athletes. To provide effective leadership that will ensure a positive learning environment and will stress the importance of academic achievement as well as competitiveness. To demonstrate a high degree of ethics, professionalism, human relations and be a positive role model for all students.
Applicants are encouraged to review Board Policy and Procedures 4295 to understand the District’s philosophy and direction for its interscholastic activities.
Candidates for coaching positions are screened and interviewed by the high school assistant principal in charge of athletics and/or principal. To apply for a coaching job, candidates submit a completed application and a letter of interest to the Personnel Department.
QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred Education and Experience
- Previous coaching experience in the assigned sport and at the same level
- Previous teaching experience at the same level as the assigned sport
Special Requirements
- Valid First Aid/CPR card prior to assuming any coaching responsibilities
- Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint clearance
- I-9 employment eligibility in compliance with the Immigrations Reform and Control Act
- HIV/HBV training (obtain within 60 days of hire date – District provided)
- Human Resources new hire training (obtain within 60 days of hire date – District provided)
Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities
- Rules and regulations governing the sport including WIAA guidelines
- Current educational research and issues related to student athletes
- Effective coaching techniques for developing student athletes
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership & Ethics:
- Teaching sportsmanship, cooperation, work ethic and responsibility to one's team
- Supporting and enforcing the District’s rules/regulations and code of conduct for athletes
- Maintaining communications with the head coach including attending required coaches’ meeting
- Complying with Monroe High School rules, District policies, and WIAA League requirements
Program Management:
- Assisting the head coach as directed
- Attending all team meetings, practices and competitions as assigned
Supervising and conducting practices and contests safely; supervising locker rooms and buses - Managing uniforms, equipment and school facilities in a responsible manner
- Assisting with press box duties and side line activities
- Ensuring the availability of a properly supplied first aid kit and emergency care cards at all times
- Monitoring athletes' school attendance, grades and personal conduct
Coaching Skill:
- Instructing athletes in safety procedures and the need to report injuries immediately to the coach
- Teaching sports techniques, rules, strategies and playing tactics
- Attending clinics/workshops related to the sport
- Conditioning athletes appropriately for activities requiring endurance, strength and agility
- Responding to player injuries with approved first aid techniques and referral to team trainer
- Adhere to federal and state laws and district regulations, policies, procedures and practices
- Mandatory reporter for incidents of child abuse, harassment, intimidation, bullying, boundary invasions, fights, substance abuse etc.
