As a Field Service Technician you will assist with on‑site installations, troubleshooting, repairs, and maintenance of telecommunications products and equipment that TDS sells and leases. The role includes direct, face‑to‑face customer contact and requires proactive sales of TDS services and products. Services include but are not limited to Telephony, Video/CATV/DBS, Internet, and high‑speed networks.
ScheduleThis role will follow a Wednesday–Saturday schedule, working four 10‑hour shifts (8:00 AM–7:00 PM). Additional overtime may be required as‑needed, and on‑call rotation is required.
Due to in‑field support and on‑call requirements, the individual selected must reside within a 60‑minute driving distance from the Monroe, Wisconsin warehouse (827 16th Ave – Monroe, WI 53566).
Responsibilities- Assist with and perform on‑site installation, troubleshooting, testing, splicing, repairing, and maintaining telephone equipment and general network equipment, customer premise equipment, Video/CATV/DBS, fiber optic/copper facilities, and other TDS products & services for new and existing customers.
- Identify location of defective cable using test equipment and repair buried, aerial, underground, and customer cable. Locate cable and fiber in response to customer requests and construction needs.
- Operate construction equipment and climb poles as required. Mark company underground and buried facilities to prevent damage.
- Keep orderly log of all locate requests in our exchange area and perform cable fault acceptance tests on newly constructed facilities.
- Respond to trouble dispatches and provide troubleshooting support techniques and corrections.
- Provide support for enhancing and maintaining record systems (cross connects, line groups, network elements, etc.).
- Deliver excellent customer service and proactively educate and sell TDS products and services to customers.
- Gain working knowledge of RUS Standards and grounding practices associated with splicing and maintenance of outside plant facilities and equipment.
Required Qualifications
- Valid driver’s license.
- Follow TDS attendance guidelines to meet business and customer needs.
- Successfully complete customer‑specific requirements, including background checks.
- Availability for on‑call/standby responsibilities; willingness to travel and work overtime as needed.
- Successfully pass all Safety Course components upon hire.
- Maintain DOT requirements for operating vehicles with GVRW >10,000 lbs.
- A+ certification and computer networking experience.
- Understanding of telecommunication products and services: inside wiring/cable, Internet/intranet, bonding & grounding, data & computer transmission concepts, fiber optic transmission, static sensitive equipment, color codes, structured wiring, Video/CATV/DBS installation, inventory systems, cable locating, battery maintenance, key systems/PBX, Centex, switch maintenance, voicemail, special circuits, fiber terminals, subscriber CXR terminals, T‑1s, ISPs, DSL, ISDN Voice & Data, testing & certifying loops.
- Experience with computer applications: databases, trouble/repair/dispatch systems, plant record systems, MS Outlook, MS Word, MS Excel.
- Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
- Demonstrated customer service and sales skills; effective verbal and written communication.
- Proven organizational skills and ability to multi‑task.
- Ability to operate vehicles with manual transmissions.
