Position: Academic Advisor TRIO Student Support Services (MV)

The Academic Advisor - TRIO Programs is responsible for the implementation of program activities such as academic counseling, academic advising, tutorials, workshops, seminars, trips, cultural enrichment, and developing educational, career, and life goals for participants. The Academic Advisor will maintain well-organized records and activities in accordance with the requirements specified in the grant application and amendments approved by the U.S. Department of Education.

Appropriate placement on the Alabama Community College System salary schedule C3-4.

This is a grant-funded and probationary status position. Continued employment is dependent on continued funding.

At a minimum, the essential functions of this position shall include:
  • Assists in the recruitment and selection of eligible program participants
  • Assists in designing and conducting orientation sessions for program participants
  • Schedules and meets with program participants regularly
  • Integrates best practices to support increased retention, graduation rates, and transfer rates of program participants
  • Assists program participants in developing educational, career, and life goals
  • Assists program participants with problem-solving/college-related issues such as encumbrances, tuition issues, computer accounts, registration, etc.
  • Diagnoses academic needs and advises students to register for the appropriate courses for a successful pathway to graduation and transfer
  • Assists in identifying, recruiting, assigning, and supervising tutors
  • Assists in providing tutor training in SSS Policies and Procedures
  • Participates in all scheduled registration days for the College
  • Organizes and participates in college tours, cultural activities, and workshops that promote the goals and outcomes of the program’s objectives (may involve nights and weekends)
  • Establishes and maintains program participant folders in accordance with the specifications of the grant proposal and the U.S. Department of Education
  • Follows up with program participants to ensure project outcomes and assessments are completed
  • Assists the program director in maintaining program rosters and providing follow-up for federal reports
  • Maintains comprehensive, timely, and accurate follow-up records for all assigned participants

  • Ensures the positive promotion of the College and integration of all campuses within the College.
  • Is prompt and punctual in reporting for work, meetings, and office hours.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in an academic or educational discipline or related field OR equivalent recent relevant full-time work experience (two years of full-time recent relevant work experience for every one year of college).
  • One year of experience in student personnel, career counseling, advising, personal and academic counseling, or related field.
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Excellent communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated skill with social media and online communication tools
  • Experience in the use of current educational technologies in the workplace including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentation software
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Direct experience working with TRIO programs.
