Aerotek is hiring for multiple Asphalt Rakers!
$20-$26/hr with weekly pay
80% of work is prevailing wage projects
This role supports asphalt paving crews on commercial, residential, municipal, and highway projects, primarily east of Pittsburgh. You will work outdoors in a fast-paced construction environment, performing physically demanding tasks that directly contribute to producing high-quality asphalt surfaces. The schedule typically runs Monday through Friday with occasional Saturdays, and shifts are generally 10–12 hours. This position is ideal for individuals who are safety-conscious, enjoy hands-on work, and want to build a long-term career in asphalt paving and heavy construction.
Responsibilities- Rake and level hot asphalt behind paving equipment to achieve a smooth, uniform surface.
- Assist paving crews in achieving proper grade, slope, and overall surface finish on roads, parking lots, and other paved areas.
- Smooth joints and transitions to ensure a high-quality pavement installation without bumps or irregularities.
- Operate hand tools including lutes, rakes, shovels, and asphalt tampers during paving operations.
- Follow foreman direction regarding asphalt placement, compaction requirements, and workflow on the job site.
- Assist roller operators and paving machine operators to maintain efficient and safe paving operations.
- Monitor asphalt temperatures and material consistency to support proper compaction and finish quality.
- Perform physical labor on paving and general construction projects as assigned.
- Load and unload materials, equipment, and tools from trucks and trailers.
- Assist with traffic control and work zone setup, including cones, signs, and barriers.
- Clean job sites and remove debris at the end of each shift or project phase.
- Support paving, milling, grading, and excavation crews with general labor tasks.
- Assist equipment operators, truck drivers, and foremen as needed to keep projects moving efficiently.
- Experience in construction, asphalt, concrete, roadway, or outdoor labor is preferred.
- Ability to perform asphalt raking and lute work with attention to grade and finish quality.
- Understanding of asphalt paving operations and basic paving workflow.
- Ability to manage grade and slope to meet project specifications.
- Knowledge of roadway and parking lot construction practices.
- Proficiency using hand tools such as rakes, shovels, lutes, and tampers.
- Capability to perform site preparation and cleanup tasks safely and efficiently.
- Awareness of traffic control procedures and work zone safety requirements.
- Utility and drainage awareness to work safely around underground and surface infrastructure.
- Skill in equipment spotting and providing effective crew support.
- Reliable attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to lift 50+ pounds on a regular basis.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
- Willingness and ability to work overtime, nights, and weekends when required.
Skills & Qualifications
- Previous asphalt paving experience is preferred.
- Experience using asphalt rakes, lutes, and other paving hand tools is a plus.
- Heavy highway or PennDOT project experience is beneficial.
- OSHA 10 certification is a plus.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat and cold.
- Ability to walk and work on uneven surfaces and freshly paved areas.
- Comfort with frequent lifting, carrying, bending, kneeling, and standing for extended periods.
- Ability to work extended 10–12 hour shifts during the construction season.
- Interest in career advancement into roles such as Operator, Roller Operator, Screed Operator, and other paving positions.
