Photochromic Dye Process Development Technician

PPG's SP Photochromic Dye Process Development team is looking for an experienced and motivated technician to support the scale-up of novel photochromic dyes in a kilo-lab environment. You will include advanced technical responsibilities along with informal leadership expectations, supporting standardization, training, and daily coordination of lab activities. We designed this position to build capability for future leadership roles. You will sit in Monroeville, PA and will report to the Senior Reacher Manager.

Responsibilities
  • Safely scale up photochromic dye processes using kilo-lab equipment, ensuring quality, reproducibility, and adherence to procedures
  • Operate and maintain reactors and associated equipment; monitor processes and perform adjustments and troubleshooting
  • Prepare, measure, and handle raw materials according to established process instructions
  • Document process data, material usage, and observations in laboratory records and electronic systems
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment; follow PPE requirements and report hazards or near-misses
  • Identify routine process or equipment issues, apply standard solutions, and escalate with clear documentation
  • Support development, improvement, and implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Contribute to continuous improvement plans focused on safety, efficiency, and product quality
  • Help with daily work planning and coordination of technician activities to ensure agreement on priorities
  • Provide technical support to team members and promote consistency across shifts
  • Communicate lab status, issues, and updates to management and partners
  • Collaborate with chemists, engineers, and other team members
  • Complete required training (or refresher training, as applicable) to achieve full proficiency in lab operations
  • Apply standardized methods while maintaining safety and quality practices
  • Develop into a subject matter expert in important processes and equipment
  • Support training of new technicians as a qualified trainer
  • Demonstrate new leadership by mentoring peers, promoting best practices, and supporting team agreement and accountability
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Technology, or related field is preferential
  • Minimum of 2 years of hands-on laboratory or relevant manufacturing experience (e.g., chemical, pharmaceutical, food, or related industries)
  • Mechanical aptitude and familiarity with laboratory or production equipment
  • Experience with Standard Operating Procedure development, process improvement, training, or workflow coordination
  • Commitment to safety, integrity, and operational excellence
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
  • Focus on continuous improvement and delivering high-quality results
