Optical / Photonics Engineer (Multiple Levels)

Locations: Monrovia, CA

Employment Type: Full-Time

Experience Level: We are hiring Junior, Engineer, Senior, Staff, and Principal Engineers
. Candidates will be considered for the appropriate level based on their education, technical expertise, and relevant industry experience.

Position Summary

We are seeking talented and highly motivated Optical / Photonics Engineers to join our growing engineering team. Successful candidates will contribute to the research, design, development, characterization, packaging, and manufacturing of advanced photonic products and optical systems for applications including high-speed optical communications, silicon photonics, datacenter networking, LiDAR, sensing, aerospace, defense, and other emerging photonics technologies.

Depending on experience and expertise, engineers may focus on optical system design, photonic integrated circuits (PICs), laser and photodetector development, optical packaging, active alignment, product development, manufacturing support, reliability engineering, or new technology development.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities may include one or more of the following areas:

  • Design, simulate, develop, and characterize optical and photonic components and systems.
  • Design optical assemblies including lenses, fiber‑optic components, laser modules, receiver modules, and silicon photonic devices.
  • Develop optical coupling solutions for lasers, photodiodes, fiber arrays, wave guides, and photonic integrated circuits.
  • Perform optical modeling, tolerance analysis, polarization analysis, thermal analysis, and performance optimization.
  • Develop photonic packaging processes including die attach, wire bonding, soldering, epoxy bonding, passive alignment, and active alignment.
  • Characterize optical devices using laboratory equipment such as optical spectrum analyzers, optical power meters, oscilloscopes, vector network analyzers, bit‑error‑rate testers, and polarization analyzers.
  • Support prototype development, engineering builds, manufacturing transfer, process improvement, and yield enhancement.
  • Analyze optical, thermal, electrical, and mechanical performance to identify and resolve technical issues.
  • Collaborate closely with cross‑functional teams including electrical, mechanical, firmware, manufacturing, quality, and reliability engineering.
  • Generate engineering documentation, specifications, test reports, and manufacturing procedures.
  • Participate in design reviews, customer support activities, supplier technical discussions, and product qualification.
Senior-level engineers may additionally
  • Lead technology development and new product architecture.
  • Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership.
  • Drive technical roadmaps and innovation initiatives.
  • Lead cross‑functional development programs from concept through production.
  • Interface directly with customers, suppliers, and strategic partners.
Required Qualifications
  • BS, MS, or PhD in Optical Engineering, Photonics, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Applied Physics, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Strong understanding of optics, photonics, fiber optics, lasers, optical communications, or semiconductor devices.
  • Experience in one or more of the following:
    • Photonic integrated circuits (PICs)
    • Fiber‑optic communications
    • Optical packaging
    • Optical testing and characterization
  • Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary engineering environment.
Preferred Qualifications

Experience with one or more of the following is desirable:

  • Optical design and simulation tools (e.g., Zemax, Code V, Ansys Lumerical, COMSOL)
  • Silicon photonics design and foundry PDK workflows
  • Optical packaging and active alignment automation
  • Optical test automation using Python, MATLAB, or LabVIEW
  • High‑speed optical communications (100G–1.6T)
  • Co‑packaged optics (CPO)
  • LiDAR and free‑space optics
  • Reliability qualification, failure analysis, and manufacturing process development
  • Statistical data analysis and Design of Experiments (DOE)
