Job Summary
The Laboratory Assistant is responsible for supporting licensed testing personnel under California Business Code 1269 regulations by managing specimen handling, pre‑analytical and analytical processes, clerical functions, inventory control, and general laboratory upkeep.
Responsibilities- Adhere to laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing.
- Log and distribute patient samples from processing areas to the respective testing areas.
- Process and prepare patient samples prior to the analytical phase (whole blood, serum/plasma, dried blood, dried serum/plasma, urine, saliva, etc.).
- Load samples onto an automated analyzer.
- Support performance and adherence to relevant SOPs.
- Perform necessary maintenance on instrumentation, small lab equipment, and general lab cleanliness; meet laboratory documentation requirements.
- Assist with proper labeling of reagents, calibrators, and QC.
- Assist with monitoring supplies and inventory in the pre‑analytical process.
- Dispose of specimens and materials after the analytical phase in accordance with safety and testing SOP requirements.
- Properly store/exit scan samples in accordance with SOP requirements.
- Maintain a clean and tidy workspace.
- Continuously look for improvements in workflow processes and recommend them to the General Supervisor.
- Follow laboratory safety requirements and report any hazards to the General Supervisor.
- Share appropriate communication with other laboratory personnel in daily huddles and throughout the work shift.
- Assist the Accessioning department as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma (minimum).
- Fine motor coordination, clear speech, normal hearing, and good visual acuity with ability to distinguish major colors.
- Ability to move readily between locations within the laboratory.
- Minimum lifting not more than 50 pounds.
