Medical Assistant - Primary Care Float Pool

We are looking for a Medical Assistant for the Primary Care Float Pool er's Health. The role provides direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of medical providers, the practice administrator, and the clinic coordinator/charge nurse. The candidate is compassionate, organized, and detail-oriented, and is expected to assist physicians and other healthcare providers with patient care, administrative tasks, and clinical duties while adhering to best practices, clinical protocols, and regulatory guidelines.

All staff are considered employees of St. Peter's Health Medical Group first, and may float to other SPHMG areas when needed.

Responsibilities Patient Care & Clinical Interventions
  • Perform patient intake, including chief complaint, vital signs, medical history, medication reconciliation, and documentation of pertinent clinical data.
  • Assist providers with examinations, procedures, and treatments.
  • Administer medications, vaccines, and injections per provider orders, state regulations, and clinic protocols.
  • Perform diagnostic testing and point-of-care testing (e.g., urinalysis, throat cultures, EKGs).
  • Conduct wound care and dressing changes under provider supervision and per state regulations.
  • Prioritize workload, respond to patient calls and messages per policy.
  • Use interventions appropriate to the population, considering culture, language, age, gender, and other factors.
  • Identify and report health concerns or changes in a patient’s condition within scope of practice and promptly communicate to the appropriate medical professional.
  • Serve as a patient advocate and assist patients in navigating the care continuum to improve satisfaction and outcomes.
Clinic Operations & Documentation
  • Maintain accurate and timely electronic health records (EHR).
  • Document all assessments, interventions, and communications within the EHR.
  • Utilize EHR, Right Fax, and other healthcare technologies effectively.
  • Answer phones in real time, return patient messages, and coordinate communication between the care team and patients.
  • Ensure exam rooms are stocked, clean, and prepared for patient visits.
  • Collaborate with the care team, assist with walk-ins and scheduled clinic visits.
  • Coordinate referrals, prior authorizations, prescription refills, and diagnostic testing orders.
  • Monitor practice schedule for updates and schedule patient appointments, follow-ups, and referrals.
  • Guide patients through the healthcare system and help them arrive at scheduled appointments prepared and on time.
Quality Improvement
  • Participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance patient care and clinic operations.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team, physicians, and community to maintain a teamwork environment.
Miscellaneous
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Attend 80% of all scheduled meetings and in-services.
  • Monitor environment for compliance with accreditation readiness.
  • Adhere to triage protocols and scope limitations; not provide care beyond competency, direct provider instruction, or act as a nurse.
Education
  • National Certification from an accredited medical assistant program required within six months of employment.
  • Maintain knowledge and skills through ongoing education and on-the-job training; complete annual competency training.
Licensure & Certification
  • Current National Certified Medical Assistant designation required within six months of employment.
  • Valid Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, re-certification every two years.
Knowledge & Experience
  • One year of healthcare experience preferred.
Aptitudes
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks, stresses, deadlines, and difficult situations.
  • Professional interpersonal and communication skills for effective, non-judgmental patient care and customer relations.
  • Accept feedback and adapt to changing environment, flexibility in scheduling and department assignments.
