A Brief Overview

Performs preparatory portions of laboratory tests, to include specimen handling and processing, and the use of Laboratory Information System. Some laboratory testing performed within scope of practice under CLIA'88. Models appropriate behavior as exemplified in MLH Mission, Vision and Values.

What you will do
  • Performs pre analytical and post analytical portions of laboratory tests within scope of practice under Tennessee Medical Laboratory Act.
  • Prepares specimens received for testing in laboratory areas such as sorting, centrifuging, decapping, separating/aliquoting and archiving.
  • Operates various types of laboratory equipment such as centrifuges and analyzers to prepare samples in specialized laboratory areas.
  • Prepares and stains smears on automated stainers.
  • Verifies accuracy of patient information, test orders, and specimen labeling. Performs required documentation for specimens.
  • Prepares handling, packing, storage, and shipping of specimens.
  • Answers telephone inquiries regarding laboratory procedures, test results and reports. Reports critical results and documents Read Back in LIS in a timely manner using correct policy and procedure.
  • Maintains inventory and stocking of supplies and equipment in the laboratory areas according to established laboratory protocol and procedures.
  • Follows established procedures for laboratory quality assurance, ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, quality standards, safety, competency, and policies and procedures.
  • Performs other job functions as assigned or requested.
Education/Formal Training Requirements
  • Required - High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Preferred - Technical Degree or Diploma Phlebotomy
Work Experience Requirements
  • Required - Laboratory with strong clinical knowledge related to laboratory testing procedures 3-5 years
  • Preferred - WORK EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATION-3-1336 1-3 years with completion of a Phlebotomy program.
Licenses and Certifications Requirements
  • Preferred - Certified Phlebotomy Technician - American Society of Phlebotomy Technicians
  • Preferred - Phlebotomy Technician - National Health career Association
  • Preferred - Phlebotomy Technician Certification - National Phlebotomy Certification Examination
  • Preferred - Phlebotomist - National Center for Competency Testing
  • Preferred - Phlebotomy Technician Certified - National Healthcare Certification Organization
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of specimen requirements and medical terminology.
  • Knowledge related to standard laboratory methods, practices, procedures, policies, regulations, and laboratory materials and equipment.
  • Knowledge in laboratory quality assurance procedures.
  • Demonstrates effective teamwork.
  • Strong attention to detail skills.
  • Proficient in basic computer skills.
  • Demonstrates quality customer service skills.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally with Associates, physicians and other outside professionals.
  • Ability to organize multiple tasks and projects and maintain control of own and others' work flow.
