The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) will perform complex laboratory testing and diagnostic procedures to support patient care within the Billings Area Indian Health Service. This role requires advanced technical expertise in laboratory sciences, ensuring accurate testing, analysis, and reporting while maintaining compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.

Key Responsibilities

" Perform advanced laboratory testing in the following areas:

  • Clinical Chemistry
  • Hematology
  • Coagulation
  • Blood Bank
  • Microbiology
  • Serology
  • Urinalysis
  • Molecular Testing

" Collect blood specimens using venipuncture, capillary, and arterial techniques

" Prepare patients and collect additional specimens such as urine and stool

" Process and analyze laboratory specimens using diagnostic equipment (analyzers, microscopes, centrifuges)

" Perform and review quality control, calibrations, and maintenance procedures

" Analyze, verify, and report accurate patient results in a timely manner

" Ensure compliance with laboratory protocols, safety standards, and infection control practices

" Maintain accurate laboratory records and documentation

" Provide care and services to a diverse patient population (newborn to elderly)

Minimum Qualifications

" Bachelor s degree in medical laboratory science, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related field

" Certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist (e.g., ASCP or equivalent)

" Experience in a clinical laboratory setting (preferred for Level II/III roles)

" Strong proficiency across all major laboratory disciplines

" Advanced phlebotomy skills (venous, capillary, and arterial blood collection)

" Knowledge of CLIA standards and laboratory compliance requirements

" Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (as required)

Reporting & Deliverables

" Submit invoices via IPP to COR or designated authority

" Maintain accurate logs of hours worked

" Provide staffing updates, coverage plans, and replacements as required

" Overtime requires prior written approval

Compliance & Standards

" Must adhere to all federal and contract requirements, including:

  • HIPAA regulations
  • PPE and infection control standards
  • Background checks and security protocols
  • Professional conduct and documentation standards.
