POSITION DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE:
School Nurse
FACILITY:
District Wide-Affiliated Buildings-Crow Agency, Fort Smith, Hardin
REPORTS TO:
Building Principals
POSITION OVERVIEW:
Provides professional quality nursing service to individuals and students, and nursing consultation to school staff. Maintains health files on all children as required by law or guidelines. Oversees and/or arranges necessary care for children whose health status does not meet requirements. Directly responsible for students' safety and well- being.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides professional quality nursing service to individuals and students, and nursing consultation to school staff
Follows established School District policies for the quality and content of health education
Maintains a professional leadership role in the development, implementation and interpretation of the school health program
Performs a variety of professional services for the detection of health problems and the promotion of good health in the school setting
Evaluates and maintains, and updates student health records
Attends to health or accident problems that arise during the school day, making appropriate referrals
Contacts parents and health care providers to secure services for children
Supervises and assists with physicals that are necessary for school programs
Administers or assists with vision and hearing screenings and make appropriate referrals
Acts as a liaison with other health agencies, students, and students' families so the handicapped or chronically ill children can function in school
Provides professional assistance on the identification and prevention of communicable diseases.
Trains and equips staff in proper health procedures
Coordinates schedules with building staff
May travel between buildings

DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION / CERTIFICATION:
Current Registered Nurse License, RN (preferred)
Current Licensed Practical Nurse, LPN (with 5+ years of experience)
CPR card
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES:
Knowledge of general concepts of child growth, development, and behavior characteristics
Knowledge and use of CPR, First Aid, and Heimlich maneuver
Knowledge of public education goals and objectives
Ability to read and interpret documents
Ability to follow both oral and written directions and instructions
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and school community
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
Ability to be flexible in scheduling and planning
Ability to effectively manage time and responsibilities
Ability to handle stressful situations
Ability to maintain confidentiality of employee and student matters
Ability to perform duties with an awareness of all District requirements and Board policies
EQUIPMENT USED:
Medical Equipment, computer, various software, copier, telephone, general school/office equipment
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, occasionally walk and stand. The employee must be able to lift and / or move up to 50 pounds. Will travel from building to other sites
Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this position, the employee rarely performs routine work. The employee frequently exercises flexibility (ability to shift from one task to another). Guidance and reinforcement are usually available. The employee frequently works within time constraints and maintains attentiveness intensity. The employee is frequently involved in social interactions which require oral and written communications.
