Registered Nurse

The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care. This includes executing orders, dispensing and administering medications, and assisting in examinations and treatment. Applies nursing and supervisory techniques required in the care of inmates/residents. Performs all technical and clinical procedures within the scope of education and licensure. Attends sick calls with the physician to see inmates/residents. Prepares a list of inmates/residents to be examined and prepares the examining room and equipment.

Operates pill call, dispenses medication, and documents as required by applicable policies. Calls Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders, and responds to emergencies. Examines and assesses new inmates/residents with illnesses or injuries. Refers inmates/residents to appropriate healthcare facilities as required by their condition. Performs emergency procedures as needed and notifies Licensed Independent Providers for treatment orders. Assists in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel.

Maintains good working relationships with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers, and outside agencies. Utilizes established policies and procedures in decision-making while exercising independent judgment. Regularly evaluates the provision of medical services to prevent inappropriate use or duplication. Maintains absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records. Assists with the review of medical files to ensure all provided services are documented.

Closely monitors all potential catastrophic illnesses. Audits pharmacy use for adherence to formulary. Complies with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled substances. Observes and records inmate/resident behavior. Inspects the medical unit for items that could be used as contraband and secures supplies and equipment. Provides health counseling and health education on an individual or group basis. Assists in preparing and maintaining a variety of standard records, reports, and logs using appropriate grammar.

Reads, analyzes, comprehends, and interprets medical and technical procedures and documents. Reviews and processes lawsuits and attends court hearings as necessary. Facilitates accreditation of the medical program by providing the required level of efficiency in medical services. Prepares and disseminates safety and accident reports. Takes appropriate action in cases of serious incidents and emergencies.
