Maintenance Technician / Mechanic, Heavy Equipment Mechanic
General
Summary:
Provide instruction for students in the basic principles of heavy equipment operation (HEO), proper pre-start procedures, basic preventative maintenance and repair procedures to enhance heavy equipment and truck-driving operation, and safe operating practice. Instruction is intended to produce well-rounded entry-level operators and insure safety of participants and others on projects and in work areas. Field instruction of students is necessary to attain learning objectives of HEO course requirements.
Maintain and repair trucks, heavy equipment, and support vehicles used in the HCT program. Maintain a safe, clean work environment. Insure safety of self, participants, and others on maintenance and repair projects and in work areas. Must be reliable and have ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and the ability to communicate effectively with individuals from many different backgrounds in stressful situations.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Instruct students in HEO operation and preventive maintenance to attain course learning objectives, work areas
50% - Perform preventative maintenance and repair of HCT vehicle fleet and report repairs needed to head mechanic and supervisor 25%
- Assign students to projects and specific equipment to meet HEO training needs and verify student driving hours.
5% - Evaluate and record student performance and attendance with feedback to students, other instructors, and supervisor 5%
- Insure safety of workplace, students and others on projects.
5% - Maintain records of equipment and vehicle repairs 5%
- Other duties as assigned 5%
- Verifiable experience as a heavy equipment operator on a variety of machines such as motor graders, dozers, wheel loaders, scrapers, excavators, and compactors;
- Ability to instruct students in heavy equipment operation and equipment maintenance/repair;
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse student population and fellow employees, and to remain calm in stressful situations;
- Ability to perform preventative maintenance and machine repairs in the field under challenging conditions;
- Ability to prepare repair and maintenance documentation and file related reports;
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong technical skills in hydraulic system repair preferred;
- Welding, machine tool, and fabrication experience preferred;
- Class A Commercial Driver’s License with a current DOT physical preferred;
