Salary Range: Entry rate is approx. $36.30 - $40.45/hr
Position type: Full-time (40 hrs/wk) subject to on‑call, overtime, nights, alternating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
Travel: Required to (and remain at) job sites for extended periods, sometimes for days or weeks at a time, in the designated seniority region.
Residency Requirement: Must maintain residency within your hired district or within 50 miles of a designated BNSF depot serving that district. Notify BNSF before any change of residence outside the hired district. Failure to comply may result in loss of travel pay benefits, repayment of previously paid travel expenses, and impact to employment status.
Training: Company paid on‑the‑job and classroom training, including travel to the BNSF Training Center.
Key Responsibilities:
- Track maintenance repair and installation: repair and rebuild railroad track, pull spikes, cut, weld, drill rail. Maintain clear right of way by removing hazards such as brush, trees, vegetation, litter, and cargo spillage.
- Maintain track bed: compress ballast, remove/install ties, replace, cut, and adjust rail, lift and carry materials with assistance.
- Operate equipment: use power hand tools (electric, pneumatic, hydraulic) and non‑powered hand tools.
- Truck driver and maintenance: operate 26K+ lb trucks and ensure proper truck and equipment maintenance and record keeping.
- Welder duties: weld, grind, cut rail; follow BNSF welding procedures; maintain records and time sheets; operate welding trucks safely; order welding supplies and safety materials.
- Daily work performed in a safety‑sensitive environment with extreme weather conditions, uneven surfaces, loud noises, fumes, and heavy machinery.
- Adhere to BNSF safety regulations, rules, and policies; wear safety equipment; respond to concerns; take action in emergencies.
Basic Qualifications:
- Eligible to work in the U.S. without company sponsorship now and in the future (e.g., H‑1B, STEM OPT/CPT, TN).
- Able to report for duty at the designated work location.
- Work safely in listed conditions and meet travel requirements.
- Read, write, and communicate in English.
- Lift and carry up to 60 lbs occasionally.
- Hold a valid state‑issued driver’s license.
- Capable of visually distinguishing colors: red, blue, green, yellow, clear light.
- Differentiate between verbal and non‑verbal signals and comprehend verbal communication in the work environment.
- Use hands for holding, grasping, turning, pulling tasks.
- Walk, stand, sit, climb on/off equipment for extended periods; use hand tools.
- Comply with safety policies, procedures, and rules, including wearing all required personal protective equipment.
- Maintain residency within hired district or within 50 miles of a designated BNSF depot.
Union membership: Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees (BMWE); union dues are required per agreement.
Seniority district transfers: Handled per union agreement; seniority based; require Director approval.
