Job DescriptionThe Research and Teaching Services Department provides user-centered and pedagogically informed research and reference services and a comprehensive literacies (information, AI, data, media, etc.) teaching and learning program for the Montclair State University community. The Department Head leads the Research Services department and staff, coordinating a team of full- and part-time librarians who deliver research and reference services, instruction, workshops, and research appointments.
This 12‑month, tenure‑track position carries an appointment as Associate Professor.
- Coordinate department faculty and staff, including tenured and tenure-track librarians; supervise staff, adjuncts, and student workers.
- Oversee information literacy and instruction, research and reference services, and scheduling of classes and workshops.
- Participate in Research Librarian responsibilities such as teaching, reference services, research appointments, and library outreach as liaison for academic departments.
- Lead assessment of departmental activities, recommend policies and procedures, collect and analyze user data, and prepare reports for library leadership and stakeholders.
- Coordinate onboarding and mentoring for new faculty and staff; hire and coordinate temporary and adjunct librarians.
- Facilitate training for new librarians, particularly during their first semester, and provide ongoing support throughout their tenure‑track period.
- Schedule and conduct regular department meetings.
- Advise on departmental, library, and campus projects; promote participation in interdepartmental and campus initiatives.
- Partner with the Bloomfield Campus Library on inter‑campus operations and initiatives.
- Represent Research and Teaching Services on the Library Administrative Team as the primary contact for related issues.
- Collaborate with the Dean, Associate Dean, and other library administrators on operational issues and strategic planning.
- Serve on library and university committees.
- Participate in professional associations and contribute to scholarly work to align departmental activities with emerging research and trends.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.

Faculty and librarians support curricular and research needs through teaching, research consultations, workshops, and reference services. Librarians work closely with academic departments and the SEEDs program, emphasizing critical information literacy. Collaboration with Bloomfield College Library helps create a university hub for student success, research, and community engagement.

- Master’s Degree in Library Science (or equivalent) from an ALA‑accredited library school.
- At least five years of significant professional library experience post‑M.L.S. or equivalent, with responsibility in public services such as reference, teaching, and outreach.
- Strong record of effective teaching and instructional design.
- Experience in an academic or research library.
- Familiarity with the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education, critical pedagogy, and current information‑literacy teaching principles.
- Demonstrated leadership supporting employee professional development.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to build partnerships.
- Experience leading collegial and productive teams.
- Strong record of professional service and scholarly activity.
- Cultural awareness and commitment to supporting learning for all students.
- Second Master’s degree in an academic discipline.
- Experience creating online learning objects or teaching online.
- Familiarity with Springshare products.
- Fluency in a second language;
Spanish preferred.
