Building Maintenance, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Reporting to the Crew Supervisor or other Supervisor associated with a specific Facilities Maintenance & Engineering Trade Shop, the Senior Repairer performs a variety of routine basic maintenance and repair tasks involved with carpentry, painting, plumbing, steam fitting, electrical and mechanical, and provides first‑rate customer service to the University Community.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities- Paint and finish wood, metal, brick, cement walls, floors, and ceilings, both interior and exterior.
- Stain, varnish, and refinish cabinets, desks, chairs, and other furnishings.
- Paint or repaint pipes, radiators, tin roofs and other iron work.
- Repair and maintain brickwork, tile floors, drains, concrete surfaces, sidewalks, steps, foundations, masonry, plaster, and stone work.
- Repair and maintain water, drainage, waste, and gas lines; toilets, washbasins, urinals; radiators, refrigerators, and laundry machinery.
- Repair and maintain buildings, office furniture, screens, storm sashes, frames, windows, ceilings, partitions, and other carpentry items.
- Install, inspect, repair, and maintain cables, wiring, motors, generators, pumps, refrigerators, radios, sound equipment, telephone switchboards and other electrical equipment.
- Repair and maintain copper leads, gutters, slate roofs, and perform flashing, papering, cutting and punching prior to slate installation.
- Handle kitchen and dairy equipment such as pots, steamers, cans, pails; ventilators, air ducts, and weatherproofing equipment.
- Clean and repair boilers, repair locks, and maintain automobiles, trucks, snow plows, and sand spreaders.
- Perform welding and brazing operations to repair furniture or equipment.
- Assign work and supervise unskilled and semi‑skilled maintenance staff.
- Use work orders to record all pertinent information and follow all safety procedures, including wearing uniform and protective equipment.
- Greet customers and staff courteously, understand their needs, and provide assistance in a friendly manner.
- Utilize electronic and manual recording systems used by the Facilities Maintenance & Engineering department.
- Perform other duties as assigned. Management retains the right to add or change job duties at any time.
Required:
- Two (2) years of experience in inspection, repair, and general maintenance of household, office, and other equipment, fixtures, furnishings, and buildings.
- Valid New Jersey driver’s license if vehicle operation is required.
- Knowledge of standard tools, materials, and methods.
- Ability to work with diverse populations and in a team environment.
- Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
- Proficient in reading, speaking, and understanding English.
- Availability to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays.
Preferred:
- Ability to analyze and troubleshoot problems.
- High School Diploma or GED certificate.
* NOTE:
This is a Civil Service position. Candidates are subject to an examination process and a 4‑Month Working Test Period. The position is essential and requires on‑campus presence. Remote work is not allowed.
Salary Range: $46,295.93 – $67,001.13 annually. Savings and health insurance, retirement plans, and tuition assistance may be available. Salary for external candidates is determined up to step four ($52,507.49).
