Position Information

Open Competitive recruitment to create an eligibility list for current and future openings. Successful candidates will work eight (8) hours a day, five (5) days a week, and twelve (12) months a year. Candidates must submit proof of all supporting documents; failure to attach any required document will result in disqualification.

Duration of Eligibility List

Successful candidates will be placed on an eligibility list that will remain valid for six months from the date of approval by the Personnel Commission.

General Purpose

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, the role performs responsible dispatching duties to assist School Police with timely responses to routine and emergency calls, monitors alarm equipment and security cameras, receives and transmits radio messages, handles telephone calls, prepares reports, logs, correspondence and files, and performs related duties as assigned.

Distingushing Characteristics

This position classification involves independent thinking and judgment when receiving and responding to calls, alarms in schools and offices; initiating, receiving, and transmitting radio messages; and dispatching School Police patrol units.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Monitors alarm equipment and security cameras and receives incoming emergency and routine radio and telephone calls; determines appropriate action based on available information; secures and records necessary information regarding incidents; and dispatches police, fire, or other emergency resources according to established procedures.
  • Maintains contact with District School Police and dispatches units to assigned intrusion calls.
  • Receives telephone calls reporting irregularities and incidents at schools or other District facilities.
  • Inputs information into the computer, collects and files incident and departmental records; compiles data and prepares reports and memorandums as assigned.
  • Operates departmental equipment, including two‑way radio systems, monitors, computer terminals, telephone, and copier.
  • Assists individuals in person or over the telephone, including limited or non‑English speaking persons, regarding emergency and non‑emergency situations.
  • Processes and maintains confidential information as necessary.
  • May operate a District vehicle.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Knowledge of:

    • Basic principles of public safety dispatching and related codes.
    • Techniques for maintaining composure in emergency situations.
    • Correct oral and written use of English.
    • Modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.
    • Operation of a computer terminal.
    • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy in person and over the telephone.
    • Technical aspects of the field of specialty.

    Ability to:

    • Monitor alarm equipment and security cameras; receive and transmit routine and emergency radio messages; receive telephone calls.
    • Reason and respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations in a calm and efficient manner.
    • Speak clearly and concisely over communication systems.
    • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
    • Interpret, apply, and explain rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
    • Operate departmental equipment such as two-way radio communications systems and monitors, computer terminals, telephone, and copier.
    • Prioritize emergency situations.
    • Compile and enter data while speaking on the radio or telephone.
    • Operate a computer terminal with speed and accuracy.
    • Perform clerical duties such as filing and typing records and reports.
    • Maintain confidentiality and discretion.
    • Complete work independently despite many interruptions.
    • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships.
    • Work rotating shifts, including holiday, evening, and weekend hours.
    • May be required to work extended hours as requested or in emergency situations.
    • Maintain a safe working environment.
    Education, Training, and Experience
    • Graduation from high school, G.E.D. equivalent, or higher.
    • One (1) year of experience in dispatching within a police or security environment.
    • One (1) year of general clerical experience.
