Position Information

This is an Open Competitive recruitment to create an eligibility list for as‑needed positions. Successful candidates are expected to work on a variable schedule, with work hours ranging from one (1) to eight (8) hours per workday.

GENERAL PURPOSE

On an as‑needed basis only, under general supervision, cleans classrooms, offices and other areas at an assigned school or facility; performs minor maintenance and repairs to furniture, fixtures and facilities; secures schools, buildings and facilities; and performs related duties as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

A Custodian I (As‑Needed) performs the same functions as a permanent Custodian I on a temporary basis only in the absence of a permanent incumbent. The Custodian I (As‑Needed) may be assigned to various sites throughout the District and cover various shifts depending on the work schedule of the absent permanent employee. The as‑needed assignment will end upon the return to duty of the permanent Custodian I employee.

Placement in the as‑needed pool for this classification has no end date. However, an employee of the District assigned to the as‑needed pool for this classification may certify out his/her test scores for the placement on an eligibility list for a permanent position in accordance with Merit system provisions of the State of Education Code. The Custodian I (As‑Needed) will remain at the first step of the appropriate salary schedule.

This is the entry‑level class in the custodial class series. Initially, under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of custodial duties. After training, incumbents work independently in maintaining the cleanliness, appearance, and safety of an assigned area at a District school or facility.
