Job Summary

The City of Montebello seeks a skilled and detail‑oriented Maintenance Worker to join the Streets Division of the Public Works Department. This full‑time position involves a wide variety of unskilled to semi‑skilled tasks in maintenance, repair, and upkeep of streets, sewers, and other public works facilities. Candidates will operate trucks, loaders, backhoes, and other motorized equipment as required. Successful applicants will be subject to a one‑year probationary work period.

Conditions

Work shifts typically start at 6:30 am. Incumbents may be required to work rotating shifts or be on standby, meaning they can be contacted during emergencies after hours, on weekends, and holidays. Weekend shifts are mandatory, and shift schedules may vary based on city needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform asphalt patching, pothole repair, and pavement maintenance.
  • Install, replace, and maintain traffic signs, street markings, and striping.
  • Remove debris from rights‑of‑way.
  • Operate vehicles and equipment—including trucks, loaders, backhoes, and power tools.
  • Complete daily work orders, logs, and reports while following all safety rules.

Incumbents may also perform duties in the following areas:

  • Streets: Preventative maintenance on streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, traffic signs, and delineation; emergency work during storms; operation of automotive equipment, skip loaders, forklifts, mowers, weed eaters, pressure washers for graffiti removal; traffic control; accurate log maintenance.
  • Trees: Planting, trimming, spraying, and removal of trees; use of hand and power tools, rigging equipment, aerial trucks, stump grinders, chainsaws, brush chippers, sprayers; mowing, edging, and maintaining grass; leaf and refuse removal; park and roadway appearance upkeep; herbicide and pesticide application; graffiti, litter, and weed abatement; seasonal duty support.
Training and Experience

Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

  • Certification or college coursework with emphasis on public works maintenance or construction is highly desirable.
  • Prior experience performing grounds and landscaping maintenance, heavy manual labor, and operation of power‑driven and motorized equipment used in general maintenance and repair is desirable.
Special Requirements
  • Possession of an appropriate valid California Driver's license.
Knowledge of
  • Methods, tools, and equipment used in municipal public works maintenance, repair, and construction work.
  • Characteristics, operation, and maintenance of motorized public works equipment and vehicles.
  • Sprinkler system design and installation practices.
  • Safe work practices.
Ability to
  • Perform a wide variety of public works maintenance, repair, and construction assignments.
  • Operate vehicles and motorized public works equipment.
  • Use hand and power tools skillfully.
  • Perform heavy physical labor requiring strength, dexterity, and agility.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Read and write at a level required for successful job performance.
  • Maintain good public relations with people contacted during work assignments.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.
