Responsibilities
- Inspects residential, commercial, and industrial buildings and other structures to determine compliance with applicable codes, ordinances, and laws.
- Maintain and provide detailed inspection and field activity reports.
- Issues written notices of violations when required.
- Review for accuracy As-Built Drawings.
- Provide oversight of special inspections.
- Familiarity with Construction Software (BIM, Procore, or similar)
- Provide updates of field status
- Coordinate, review, and manage RFI processes
- Approves acceptable work or indicates in writing corrections necessary to comply with codes and ordinances.
- Explains codes and ordinance requirements for proper installation of equipment, materials and systems to county personnel, builders, architects, contractors, and the public.
- Develops and monitors standards and service levels to maintain responsive customer service.
- Studies new materials and methods of building construction to keep abreast of modern development. Maintains a current and thorough working knowledge of relevant building codes and standards, and is able to correctly interpret and apply them.
Education
Graduation from high school or equivalent; supplemented by any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for satisfactory job performance.
License or Certificates
- Possession of a valid California driver’s license and satisfactory driving record is required.
- DSA, HCAI is strongly preferred
- ICC certification is required
- Inspector of Record experience
- Quality Assurance/Quality Control experience
- Design/Build experience
- Strong cost, schedule, quality, and document control experience
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills are required
- Public/commercial building project experience is required (offices, schools, historic, hospitals, multi-family housing, etc.)
- Self-motivated to do the right thing and protect the client's best interests
- Valid California Driver License and satisfactory driving record
- Physical ability to perform the essential duties of the position. This includes the capacity to sit, stand, walk on level and occasionally slippery surfaces, reach, twist, turn, kneel, bend, squat, stoop, crouch, grasp, as well as lift, carry, and push tools, equipment, and materials in the course of daily inspections and related tasks
- Extensive knowledge of vertical and horizontal construction and inspection; principles, practices, applicable laws, regulations, codes, and departmental policies governing the construction of public works projects and subdivisions; methods, materials, equipment, and safety hazards of construction; surveying, drafting, and mathematics to calculate areas, volumes, and elevations; technical report writing and preparation of correspondence; principles and practices of supervision and training.
- Skill in using a Windows-based desktop computer and computer-related equipment; modern office equipment operation, telephone systems, and radio communications equipment; preparing clearly written correspondence and technical reports involving mathematical computations; compiling and maintaining neat, accurate, and organized records necessary for successful job performance.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to interpret construction contracts, plans, and specifications applying applicable laws, rules and regulations.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering plans, blueprints and specifications; records of survey, legal descriptions, and tract descriptions.
- Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; maintain cooperative working relationships with a wide range of diverse groups including engineers, developers, contractors, public officials, community members, and staff.
- Ability to understand departmental functions and carry out complex written and/or verbal directions; recognize scope and authority reflecting program goals and the intent of the supervisor.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment and decision-making; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships; supervise the work of others.
