Part-time Faculty Pool Disabled Student Program Services Counselor

Monterey Peninsula College is currently accepting applications to establish a pool for future part‑time teaching assignments in this discipline.

The part‑time instructor will work under the supervision of the area Dean and in coordination with the Department to provide instruction, counseling, and support services in the Access Resource Center (ARC) at Monterey Peninsula College.

Responsibilities include:

• Provide academic, vocational, and disability‑management counseling to students with a variety of disabilities.
• Conduct initial interviews, assessments, document collection, advisement, development of educational plans, registration assistance, and maintain ARC (DSPS) student files in compliance with state and federal regulations.
• Facilitate support services and accommodations and develop and/or monitor ARC (DSPS) Academic Accommodation Plans.
• Remain familiar with assistive technology and alternate media to make accommodation recommendations.
• Refer students to on‑campus and community resources as needed.
• Work with appropriate personnel to meet accessibility laws and regulations in higher education.
• Maintain liaison with educational and community‑based organizations, including the Department of Rehabilitation, for ongoing referral.
• Conduct student outreach, recruitment, and retention activities.
• Consult and problem‑solve with staff and faculty on disability‑related matters and student educational issues.
• Advocate for students with disabilities as appropriate.
• Participate in departmental, divisional, and campus meetings and ARC program review processes.
• Participate in development and achievement of ARC program student learning outcomes.
• Represent students with disabilities in college activities.
• Demonstrate awareness and appreciation for the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff.

• Possession of a master’s degree, or equivalent foreign degree, in rehabilitation counseling,
  OR Possession of a master’s degree, or equivalent foreign degree, in special education, and at least twenty‑four upper‑division or graduate‑level semester units in counseling, guidance, student personnel, psychology, or social work;
  OR A master’s degree in counseling, guidance, student personnel, psychology, career development, or social welfare; and either at least twelve upper‑division or graduate‑level semester units specifically in counseling or rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities, or two years of full‑time experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following: counseling or guidance for students with disabilities, or counseling and/or guidance in industry, government, public agencies, military or private social welfare organizations where the responsibilities were predominantly for persons with disabilities;
  
  OR The equivalent (Equivalency Forms must be submitted for consideration);
  AND a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

• Experience providing counseling services to students with disabilities at the community‑college level.
• Experience teaching specialized courses for students with disabilities at the community‑college level, such as Learning Skills courses or the equivalent.
• Experience conducting workshops and program presentations about DSPS.
• Willingness and ability to collaborate with colleagues on matters promoting services for students with disabilities and the ARC program.
