TAMC Student Fellows serve as high-level technical specialists bridging the gap between the Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC) and the Middlebury Institute’s mission of social justice and language inclusion. The fellowship requires proficiency in Spanish and expertise in translation, survey methodology, graphic design, content and curriculum development, and the implementation of community-centered policy. TheTAMC Student Fellows will work closely with the TAMC Faculty Fellows on a variety of tasks, including qualitative and quantitative research, curriculum development, mapping, strategy development, public outreach in English and Spanish, and administrative support.

This is a unique opportunity to gain hands‑on experience in local, Monterey-based community-engaged work.

TheTAMC Fellowship is a partnership between the Middlebury Institute of International Studies (MIIS) and the Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC), in which students, staff, and faculty collaborate on projects addressing language inclusion, community engagement, sustainability, and livability. Our approach is grounded in theCoLabinitiative, which is collaborative, intentional, social justice-oriented, relationship-focused, and community-driven.

We are currently hiring a TAMC student fellow who will work with Dr. Gabriel Guillén (TAMC fellowship manager and faculty fellow), Dr. Carolyn Meyer (TAMC faculty fellow), and AJRistino(current TAMC student fellow).

This is a California MIIS student position compensated at the Level C rate on the Midd student wage scale: $17.95 per hour

Main Responsibilities:
  • Design educational and promotional content, including brochures, videos, and websites with interactive mapping.
  • Collect and analyze research data to guide regional transportation policy.
  • Collaborate with TAMC staff and community members to localize bilingual materials (English/Spanish), build engagement strategies, and promote street safety.
  • Translate TAMC technical, policy, and educational materials accurately between English and Spanish for local communities.

Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Dispositions:

  • Professionalproficiencyin Spanish.
  • Experience navigating the linguistic and social complexities of Monterey County’s diverse demographics.
  • Proven ability to engage in professional research, curriculum development, and public outreach.
  • Hands‑on experience with graphic design, content creation, GIS mapping, and web design.
  • Understandingofhow to move projects from theoretical research to practical, community‑engaged application.
  • Ability to produce professional‑standard deliverables with minimal editorial oversight.

Physical Requirements/Environment:

  • The Middlebury Institute of International Studiesmaintainsa smoke‑free workplace and complies with the Federal Drug‑Free Schools and Communities Act and the Drug-Free Workplace Act.
  • This position requires occasional moderate physical activity, including the ability to sit for extended periods, walk, bend, and lift up to 25 pounds.
  • TAMC Student Fellows will travel to different locations in Monterey County, and transportation costs will be reimbursed.

Unless restricted by certain visa status, all students with an active status for the semester are eligible for jobs on campus.

Students on leave or withdrawn are not eligible to work in student employment positions until the semester in which they return. If you are currently withdrawn or on leave you are eligible to be employed in staff positions.
