Job Description and DutiesUnder the direction of the Area Senior Construction Engineer, the incumbent performs a wide variety of difficult and complex transportation engineering work and serves as the licensed professional resident engineer on construction projects. Responsibilities include assigning work, giving instructions, making decisions on engineering and administrative problems, and directing work on transportation projects.
- Perform complex transportation engineering tasks.
- Operate as licensed resident engineer on construction projects.
- Assign work, issue instructions, resolve engineering and administrative issues.
- Coordinate with contractors and internal team members to ensure project success.
- Valid Professional Engineering License (Civil) required for Range D appointment.
- Meet Minimum Qualifications under Pattern II and possess the required education and experience.
- Eligibility determined by Transportation Engineer (Civil) exam score.
- Current state civil service eligibility or be on the state examination list.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license when operating a state-owned or leased vehicle.
- Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) required; typed, no more than two pages, 12‑point Arial.
- Knowledge of contract administration paperwork, Caltrans Construction Manual, Standard Specifications, and Special Provisions.
- Familiarity with highway and bridge construction, design engineering, and cost estimating.
- Ability to administer construction contracts, interpret and enforce Caltrans plans and specifications, monitor expenses, and lead work teams.
- Effective communication with contractors to provide direction and resolve conflicts.
- Team collaboration and relationship building.
