The Obstetrics and Gynecology Ambulatory RN serves as a clinical partner to MMG physicians and advanced practice providers, supporting patients across the spectrum of women’s health, including prenatal, postpartum, gynecologic, and preventative care within the outpatient setting. This role emphasizes patient safety, telephone triage, care coordination, and management of obstetric and gynecologic conditions.

The Ambulatory RN comprehensively assesses patient health status to support the development, execution, and evaluation of individualized and population-based care plans. This role utilizes clinical judgment, data, and evidence-based guidelines to drive high-quality care. Key dimensions of this position include care coordination, patient safety, quality outcomes, teamwork, patient education, and population health management.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Women’s Health Population Management & Care Coordination

  • Serves as a primary RN resource for patients across obstetric and gynecologic care, including prenatal, postpartum, and routine gynecologic conditions
  • Collaborates with physicians and advanced practice providers to develop, implement, and evaluate evidence-based care plans
  • Follows up with patients regarding abnormal laboratory and diagnostic results in accordance with standing orders and provider guidance, including patient notification, education, and coordination of next steps
  • Monitors patients’ clinical status, including pregnancy progression, symptom changes, and response to treatment plans
  • Identifies patients at increased risk for complications (e.g., hypertensive disorders, gestational diabetes, postpartum concerns) and escalates care appropriately
  • Coordinates care across the outpatient continuum, including primary care, specialists, and ancillary services

Prenatal & Postpartum Care Support

  • Supports care of patients throughout the prenatal and postpartum periods, including:
  • Reinforcement of prenatal care plans and visit schedules
  • Monitoring for concerning symptoms (e.g., bleeding, decreased fetal movement, signs of preeclampsia)
  • Postpartum follow-up, including physical recovery and emotional well-being
  • Provides education on pregnancy expectations, warning signs, and when to seek care
  • Assists with coordination of prenatal testing, ultrasounds, and specialty referrals
  • Supports early identification and escalation of maternal or fetal concerns

Gynecologic Care & Procedural Support

  • Supports patients with common gynecologic conditions, including abnormal bleeding, pelvic pain, infections, and menopause-related concerns
  • Assists with coordination and follow-up for in-office procedures, including:
    • IUD/implant placement or removal
    • IUI
    • Endometrial biopsy
    • Colposcopy
    • Medical abortion
  • Provides pre- and post-procedure education, including expectations, symptom monitoring, and when to seek care
  • Assesses and triages post-procedure symptoms, including bleeding, pain, or signs of infection

Patient Assessment, Access & Symptom Management

  • Performs independent nursing assessments using strong clinical judgment and critical thinking skills
  • Provides comprehensive patient and family education, including:
    • Pregnancy, postpartum, and gynecologic health
    • Medication use in pregnancy and general women’s health
    • Contraceptive options and reproductive health planning
    • When and how to seek care for concerning symptoms
    • Abnormal results (e.g., lab, diagnostic, biopsy)
  • Delivers education during end-of-visit consultations, nurse visits, and telephonic outreach
  • Engages patients in self-management and shared decision-making, promoting adherence and improved outcomes

Clinical Operations & Symptom Management

  • Manages and triages incoming patient communication, including symptom calls and clinical advice requests, ensuring appropriate level of care and timely access
  • Utilizes standardized workflows and protocols to support safe, efficient patient disposition (e.g., home care, same-day visits, emergency department, or escalation to provider)
