Job Description
This position supports oncology physicians with patient care, injection administration, and laboratory logistics.
Responsibilities- Systems Management
- Navigate ONCO EMR patient flowsheet to identify injection regimen, dosing parameters, scheduling, cycle/day numbers, and move orders.
- Schedule follow‑up appointments and print schedules; record vitals, review medication list, verify smoking status.
- Fax documents, print demographics, office notes, lab reports, insurance cards.
- Review patient medication list and send prescriptions to designated pharmacy.
- Identify correct ICD‑9 / ICD‑10 diagnosis codes for orders.
- Injection Administration
- Adhere to OSHA requirements and safe handling procedures.
- Remove injections from vital path machine; use proper technique for subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intradermal injections.
- Document administration in ONCO EMR; maintain Injection Administration Competency Record.
- Maintain knowledge of indications, side effects, and complications of common injections (e.g., Procrit, Aranesp, Neupogen, Neulasta, Sandostatin, Faslodex, Lupron, B12, Hepatitis B, Flu vaccine, Pneumococcal, Tuberculin).
- Report complications to RN as appropriate.
- Department Process & Patient Flow
- Check daily schedule, prepare exam rooms, and manage physicians' injection schedule efficiently.
- Assist patients and colleagues; recognize changes in patient condition and alert staff.
- Communicate efficiently with physicians and staff across departments.
- Assist with bone marrow procedure and provide patient/family education.
- Translate Spanish for oncology patients (bilingual MAS). Provide second MA check of injections.
- Manage voicemail and forward messages appropriately.
- Discharge patients in a timely manner; coordinate ambulance or direct admissions; provide documentation for EMS personnel.
- Assist RN with telephone triage; take messages accurately; notify RN or physician of emergency calls.
- Procedure
- Prepare for bone marrow procedure, educate patients/families, and document.
- Lab Coverage
- Adhere to OSHA requirements and safe specimen handling.
- Perform efficient blood draws, specimen processing, and paperwork completion.
- Physical Factors
- Vision sufficient to read handwritten, typed, and computer documents.
- Speech and hearing sufficient for detailed communication.
- Motor and manual dexterity for operating computers, fax machines, and needles.
- Physical ability to reach, lift, and bend to retrieve files; lift up to 20 lbs.
- Ability to walk one flight of stairs and move between patients and departments.
- Certified Medical Assistant with current NHA, AAMA, or CCMA certification.
- Proficiency with ONCO EMR systems.
- Knowledge of injection protocols and safety procedures.
- Strong communication and documentation skills.
- Spanish language proficiency (bilingual MAS) beneficial.
$21.00 – $30.24 per hour, commensurate with experience.
