DEFINITION

Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of skilled duties in the construction, installation, modification, maintenance and repair of electrical systems, machinery, motors, devices, and related facilities used in the collection, transmission and treatment of wastewater/water; at reclamation facilities and cogeneration facilities and performs related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from the Utilities Supervisor. No direct supervision of staff is exercised.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

The Electrician performs a variety of skilled duties in the construction, installation, modification, maintenance and repair of industrial electrical equipment and devices, such as transformers, motor controls, generators, co-generators, motors and machinery used at Agency facilities. Incumbents may advance to the higher level after gaining experience and demonstrating proficiency, which meet the qualifications for the higher-level class as specified by standards set by M1W.

Essential Functions
Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Installs conduits, wires, pull boxes, switchboards, controllers and switches required in making additions, extensions or alterations in industrial electrical systems; installs motors, controls, telemetry equipment, transformers, exciters and generators.
  • Tests, troubleshoots, locates, repairs and performs preventive maintenance on a variety of industrial electrical systems, components and devices associated with the collection, transmission and treatment of wastewater.
  • Repairs and replaces defective parts in motors, generators, storage batteries, power transfer, regulation and phasing equipment, uninterruptible power supplies, switchboards, controllers, conductors, switches and other industrial electrical fixtures in making additions, extensions and modifications in electrical systems; installs, maintains and repairs electromechanical, and electrical components of equipment and machinery, including transformers, exciters, generators, co-generators, and pneumatic and hydraulic devices.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and repair of plant, field and shop electrical and electronic systems, components, devices and equipment, including hazardous chlorine feed and leak detection equipment, laboratory equipment, lift stations, motors and electrical-mechanical valves.
  • Disconnects electrical sources, uses lockout/tag out procedures and current OSHA requirements; reconnects and operates equipment at panel for maintenance and repair purposes.
  • Plans and lays out work from instructions and/or work orders using blueprints, sketches and drawings.
  • Works in vaults and other confined spaces utilizing proper safety techniques and equipment in accordance with Cal-OSHA, Agency and departmental safety policies and procedures.
  • Schedules and coordinates activities with other sections and divisions.
  • Plans and lays out jobs from blueprints, drawings, sketches or verbal instructions; maintains records in the form of blueprints, plans and specifications for industrial electrical, instrumentation, telemetry and other related devices.
  • Responds to emergency callouts/situations as necessary.
  • Operates vehicles to travel to various Agency facilities and locations.
  • Requests parts, tools, materials and supplies.
  • May provide technical assistance and advice to other Departmental personnel.
  • May be required to work shifts, nights, weekends, holidays, overtime, respond to call backs and/or standby duty.
