Purpose: Provide comprehensive disability advising and support to students, ensuring access to educational accommodations and related resources.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES New Student Disability Advising- Determines eligibility and disability accommodations through an interactive process with each student, including intake interviews.
- Interprets diagnostic assessment results and related CSU/CSUMB policies to verify eligibility for SDAC services.
- Provides advising on eligibility, accommodations, self‑advocacy, learning outcomes, and retention strategies.
- Applies federal and state mandates and CSU policy to determine eligibility and verification.
- Provides disability management consultation, interventions, and confidential counseling during peak times.
- Supports students with housing accommodations during non‑peak advising periods.
- Explains SDAC resources and encourages self‑advocacy; refers to on‑ and off‑campus services.
- Develops, implements, monitors, and modifies individualized student action plans.
- Completes the interactive process between semesters and academic years.
- Engages with students, parents, faculty, and staff to provide advising and support.
- Addresses complaints and conflicts related to equal access; recommends and facilitates solutions.
- Ensures timely consultations and case‑by‑case consideration.
- Acts as primary liaison to Student Housing & Residential Life for housing accommodations.
- Collaborates with faculty, department chairs, and deans to deliver accommodations.
- Consults with university partners on disability‑related issues.
- Advocates for students with other campus partners.
- Refers and collaborates with a wide variety of CSUMB support offices and community services.
- Maintains confidential student files and documents timely records in SDAC’s database.
- Upholds professional standards and CSU policies.
- Supports SDAC outreach during campus events and other opportunities.
- Performs other job‑related duties and special projects as assigned.
Graduation from a four‑year college or university in the behavioral sciences, public or business administration, or a related field. Additional specialized experience may substitute for education on a year‑for‑year basis.
ExperienceTypically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressive student services work experience, with one year in the program preferred but not required. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a related field can substitute for one year of experience. A doctorate may substitute for three years of experience for positions with major counseling responsibilities.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS / DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE- Three years working with students with disabilities in higher education.
- A master’s degree in Social Sciences, Social Work, Student Development, Rehabilitation Counseling, or a related field.
- Familiarity with ADAAA, Rehabilitation Act, and other disability policies.
- Advanced skill in cross‑cultural disability management advising.
- Knowledge of assistive technology and higher education systems (Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Oracle/People Soft).
- Second language fluency and knowledge of FERPA.
