About the Department of Theatre and MusicFormerly the separate departments of Music and Theatre, the new Department of Theatre and Music combines two strong performing programs into a single department. Offering BFA , BM, BA, and BS degrees, the department serves both majors and non-major alike, encouraging participation in productions and ensembles from across campus. Primarily housed in two buildings on campus, the Department of Performing Arts produces over 100 events each year, including several mainstage theatre productions in the recently opened Alan and Lindsey Song Center for the Arts.
The performing facilities include the 240-seat LeBaron Recital Hall, the 1200-seat Palmer Auditorium, the 300-seat Discover Shelby Theatre, and the 100-seat Michael and Sue Meadows Black Box Theatre.
The College of Fine Arts at the University of Montevallo offers 16 degree programs across the fields of Art, Communication Studies, Mass Communication, Music, and Theatre to over 500 students. The College provides instruction and cultural experiences fundamental to the liberal-arts education of Montevallo students, as well as aesthetic enrichment for the citizens of central Alabama. We believe that the interaction of a liberal-arts education, combined with conservatory style and hands‑on experiences, creates the next generation of creative thinkers and problem solvers.
The overriding mission of the University of Montevallo, unique in Alabama higher education, is to provide to students from throughout the state an affordable, geographically accessible, “small college” public higher educational experience of high quality with a strong emphasis on undergraduate liberal studies and with professional programs supported by a broad base of arts and sciences, designed for their intellectual and personal growth in pursuit of meaningful employment and responsible, informed citizenship.
