Salary Information

Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade.

A starting salary may be negotiated and will be commensurate with education, training and experience in alignment with pay administration policies and Montgomery Personnel Board Rules & Regulations.

Nature of Work

The fundamental reason this position exists is to provide courtroom and facility security for the Montgomery Municipal Court and to serve legal process as required. Employees in this classification are responsible for conducting physical inspections of individuals and items entering the Municipal Court and for restraining or managing disruptive individuals when necessary. The work responsibilities include serve alias warrants, arrest warrants, subpoenas, and summons;

assists the Municipal Court Bailiff in maintaining proper order in the courtroom before, during, and after court sessions; assists other bailiffs and security personnel in screening individuals entering the Montgomery Municipal Court; performs clerical and administrative duties, including reviewing forms and correspondence; providing permissible case‑related information to callers; maintaining records and release dates of defendants sentenced to jail by the Court;

and researching records and manage the movement of City Jail inmates and associated documentation. The Assistant Municipal Court Bailiff is distinguished from the Municipal Court Bailiff in that the Municipal Court Bailiff has overall responsibility for the smooth operation of court security functions and for supervising Assistant Municipal Court Bailiffs and other security personnel. Work is performed under the supervision of the Municipal Court Bailiff.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or G.E.D. and one year of law enforcement experience. Must have and maintain current certification as a law enforcement officer by the Alabama Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission (APOSTC).

Qualifying education, training and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job will be considered.

Special Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama Driver’s license and an insurable driving record. Must pass a background check with no convictions of misdemeanors or felonies involving violence, force, or moral turpitude. Must be willing to work some nights as required to secure night court proceedings, administer warrants, or perform major work responsibilities.

Working Conditions

Bailiffs working in court security stand on their feet for long periods of time in order to operate the necessary equipment. They may encounter individuals under emotional stress, individuals who are attempting something illegal, and individuals who may become violent. Officers working in process serving spend considerable time traveling in an automobile. As they serve papers, they may encounter individuals who are hostile or difficult.
