Burkes Mechanical is a multi-state heavy industrial contractor providing mechanical, electrical, civil construction, and fabrication services to pulp & paper, chemical, petroleum, and manufacturing facilities.

We are hiring a Project Safety Manager for a long-term data center project based in Montgomery, AL.

The Site Safety Manager (SSM) provides support, advice, and guidance to project managers, superintendents, foremen, and field employees in maintaining a safe work environment. The SSM helps plan, implement, and enforce safety policies and procedures on-site to ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, company standards, and project-specific safety requirements. This role promotes a culture of safety, minimizes workplace hazards, and works closely with the corporate safety director, project management, subcontractors, and field personnel to prevent accidents and injuries.

Key Responsibilities

  • Be a role model for safety, promoting a positive safety culture and encouraging safe work practices
  • Ensure safety indoctrination for new employees, subcontractors, and visitors
  • Develop and implement site-specific safety plans and programs
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local safety regulations (OSHA, DOT, EPA, etc.)
  • Perform worksite inspections to assure compliance with applicable safety rules and regulations, and document inspections weekly
  • Assist company management and clients with investigation of incidents, accidents, and near misses; assist with reports and corrective actions
  • Assist with toolbox talks and provide ongoing safety training for site personnel
  • Stop work when unsafe conditions or behaviors are observed and ensure corrective actions are taken
  • Maintain safety documentation, including permits, logs, training records, and inspection reports
  • Coordinate with project managers, superintendents, and subcontractors to integrate safety into daily operations
  • Participate in pre-task planning and job hazard analyses (JHA)
  • Assist with audits and inspections by regulatory agencies or clients
Skills and Qualifications
  • Minimum of 5 years of safety experience
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations and construction safety standards
  • OSHA 30-hour certification required
  • Strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work in active construction environments and varying weather conditions
