Salary Information

Compensation plans are based on a multi-step progression system. The pay range reflects the entry level and maximum salary potential in the assigned pay grade. A starting salary may be negotiated and will be commensurate with education, training and experience in alignment with pay administration policies and Montgomery Personnel Board Rules & Regulations.

The fundamental reason this classification exists is to support the City’s urban development goals, playing a key role in shaping the future of the city by evaluating priority areas for redevelopment, crafting inspired conceptual design solutions, and guiding projects from early vision through implementation. The position works collaboratively with City departments, developers, business leaders, community groups, and residents to translate urban design objectives into meaningful, visible outcomes.

It requires thoughtful application of professional standards, policies, ordinances, and regulations to address complex design challenges and advance high‑quality urban development.

Key responsibilities include:

working with confidential project information before it becomes public, using specialized design and planning software to visualize proposed development, managing the administrative and documentation tasks that keep projects progressing, ensuring alignment with established policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements, coordinating research, maintaining accurate project data, and documenting key decisions to support clear communication and successful project delivery.

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Urban Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Planning, or a closely related field; and two (2) years of progressively responsible professional experience in urban design, including the creation and rendering of urban design plans and concepts.
